As the Hollywoodbets Durban July celebrates its 130th edition, talented local designers step into the spotlight, each presenting a unique interpretation of this year\u2019s theme, Country Allure, through creativity, craftsmanship and storytelling.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

For more than a century, the Durban July has been as much a celebration of fashion as it is of horse racing. The annual event continues to set the tone for South African style, transforming Greyville\u2019s racecourse into a showcase of creativity, glamour and bold self-expression.<\/p>\n

One of the most anticipated highlights of the fashion experience is the Invited Designer Showcase, where some of the country\u2019s most respected designers present their interpretation of the year\u2019s theme, and demonstrate why KZN remains a powerhouse of South African fashion.<\/p>\n

From established names to rising designers, these local creatives draw inspiration from heritage, landscapes, personal journeys and the enduring connection between country life and elegance. Here, we meet the designers flying the province\u2019s flag on one of the country\u2019s biggest fashion stages.<\/p>\n

Sibu Msimang<\/strong><\/p>\n

Finding beauty in adaptation<\/strong><\/p>\n

For more than 20 years, Sibu Msimang has created elegant designs that empower women to feel confident and unforgettable. The Umlazi-born designer\u2019s journey into fashion began after a chance encounter with an inspirational book encouraged her to pursue her dream through fashion studies at the Durban University of Technology. Today, Sibu is known for her bespoke occasion wear and matric dance gowns, but for this year\u2019s July she turns her attention to the natural world. Inspired by a woman who leaves city life behind for the countryside by the sea, her collection explores themes of adaptation, awareness and personal growth. Drawing influence from a resilient cactus thriving in a salty ocean environment and the natural materials women use to create traditional crafts, Sibu\u2019s designs celebrate the beauty of learning to move with life\u2019s changing tides.<\/p>\n

Hanrie Lues Bridal<\/strong><\/p>\n

A journey from convention to freedom<\/strong><\/p>\n

Award-winning bridal designer Hanrie Lues has built a reputation for exquisite couture craftsmanship and timeless elegance. Working from her Hilton studio, she continues to create bespoke gowns that have earned national recognition, including multiple Best Wedding Dress in South Africa accolades. For Country Allure, Hanrie tells the story of a young woman travelling into America\u2019s Wild West during the early 1800s. As the journey unfolds, so too does the heroine\u2019s transformation from a conventional debutante into a fearless woman who challenges society\u2019s expectations. Through each garment, Hanrie captures a powerful narrative of adventure, self-discovery and liberation, proving that fashion can be every bit as compelling as storytelling.<\/p>\n

Award-winning designer Mzwandile Mathonsi has become one of Durban\u2019s most exciting fashion success stories. From sketching outfits as a child in KwaMashu to showcasing collections internationally, his journey reflects creativity, determination and a deep passion for design. Inspired by country music icon Dolly Parton and the colours of rural landscapes, Mzwandile\u2019s Hollywoodbets Durban July collection brings a contemporary interpretation to this year\u2019s Country Allure theme. Indoni Fashion House<\/strong><\/p>\n

Honouring Basotho heritage<\/strong><\/p>\n

Designer Kwenzi Nkomo has become one of KZN\u2019s most exciting fashion voices, known for celebrating African elegance through contemporary design. Through Indoni Fashion House, she continues to blend culture, craftsmanship and modern fashion with striking effect.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s collection takes inspiration from the iconic Basotho horsemen of Lesotho, whose horsemanship, resilience and distinctive style have become symbols of cultural pride throughout Southern Africa.<\/p>\n

By combining traditional influences such as Basotho blankets, Mokorotlo hats and symbolic textures with denim, leather and isiShweshwe, Kwenzi creates a collection that bridges heritage and contemporary fashion. The result is a bold tribute to identity, craftsmanship and the enduring spirit of Southern Africa.<\/p>\n

Mita-N Dezynz<\/strong><\/p>\n

Inspired by the majesty of the horse<\/strong><\/p>\n

Inanda-born designer Muzi Mlambo\u2019s rise through the Durban Fashion Fair ranks has established him as one of the province\u2019s most exciting creative talents. This year marks a major milestone as he debuts as an Invited Designer at the Durban July. Drawing directly from the horse itself, Muzi\u2019s collection celebrates the beauty, strength and grace synonymous with both country life and horse racing. Rich browns, coppers and rose gold tones evoke the warmth of leather and the luxury associated with the racing world. One garment mirrors the movement of a horse\u2019s tail, while another incorporates leather-inspired elements reminiscent of jockey attire and equestrian equipment. A dramatic final look references the peaks of the Drakensberg, combining structure, texture and opulence to create a powerful statement of elegance and strength.<\/p>\n
