{"id":49747,"date":"2026-08-07T08:00:10","date_gmt":"2026-08-07T06:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/?p=23054"},"modified":"2026-08-07T08:25:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T06:25:35","slug":"this-indoor-plant-is-a-keeper","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/highway-berea\/blog\/2026\/08\/07\/this-indoor-plant-is-a-keeper\/","title":{"rendered":"This indoor plant is a keeper!"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Commonly known as the rubber plant, Ficus Elastica is both timeless and stylish.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Did you know that the Ficus elastica, also known as the rubber Ficus, has been a popular indoor plant for more than 100 years?\u00a0 It may be a classic but it\u2019s certainly not outdated, with striking new varieties bringing colour and elegance into homes and offices.<\/p>\n<p>Besides being an attractive statement plant that fits in with a range of d\u00e9cor styles, there are other reasons for its enduring popularity.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a robust, hard-to\u2013kill plant that doesn\u2019t require a lot of attention, good for beginners and those with busy lifestyles.<\/li>\n<li>The newer varieties with colourful foliage or striking leaves are eye-catching feature plants that stand out on their own or in combination with other indoor plants.<\/li>\n<li>While Ficus elastica varieties do best with bright, indirect light, they also tolerate lower light.<\/li>\n<li>The rubber Ficus is a natural air purifier that helps to improve air quality within the home. The leaves have the ability to absorb and breakdown harmful airborne pollutants as well as filter out toxins found in household products and furniture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A step back in time: \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This centuries old tree from the rainforests of Southeast Asia was used by the indigenous people who made the first natural rubber from the tree\u2019s milky sap. The name Ficus elastica is most likely derived from the elasticity of the rubber material. Later grown commercially for rubber production the rubber Ficus also became a sought after indoor plant in England in the late 1800\u2019s and early 1900\u2019s because of its attractive glossy leaves and ability to grow in low light.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s varieties<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23055\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23055\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23055 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-07-08-2026-gardening-indoor-plants-photo-2-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23055\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ficus elastica \u2018Robusta\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Ficus elastica \u2018Robusta\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All these years later the original Ficus elastica \u2018Robusta\u2019 is still a presence in homes and offices. It has glossy green leaves with a pronounced midrib. It grows neatly upright and true to its name it is a robust low maintenance plant that can tolerate low light.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23056\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23056\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23056 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-07-08-2026-gardening-indoor-plants-photo-3-400x359.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"359\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23056\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ficus elastica \u2018Tineke\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Ficus elastica \u2018Tineke\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a truly beautiful plant with variegated creamy white and light green leaves with a pink undertone, pink midrib and pink stems. It can grow up to 2m indoors but doesn\u2019t mind being trimmed to keep its height in check.<\/p>\n<p>Use it on its own or as a backdrop for other lower growing foliage plants. It fits in well with minimalist and modern interiors as well as on patios that have bright indirect light.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23057\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23057\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23057 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-07-08-2026-gardening-indoor-plants-photo-4-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23057\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ficus elastica \u2018Red Ruby\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Ficus elastica \u2018Red Ruby\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For impact, you can\u2019t do better than Ficus Red Ruby. It needs bright light to show off the bright pink and red tones of its leaves. It has olive green to dark chocolate brown leaves offset by a red midrib and coral-red new leaves. To encourage new leaves, feed with liquid fertiliser, at half strength, once a month from spring to autumn.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23059\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23059\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23059 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-07-08-2026-gardening-indoor-plants-photo-6-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ficus \u2018Audrey\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Ficus Audrey <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This Ficus has large, velvety leaves with prominent creamy-white veins that stand out. It is becoming an alternative to the Fiddle Leaf fig as it is more forgiving and less temperamental. It grows into an elegant indoor tree and needs only moderate care and bright indirect light.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Care tips<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ficus elastica varieties need at least six hour of bright indirect light but not direct sun. The green leaved varieties can tolerate lower light but those with coloured leaves need bright light to keep the colours bright.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the soil moist, but not water-logged soil. Water when the topsoil becomes slightly dry. In very hot, dry weather misting will raise the humidity level and also keep the leaves clean.<\/li>\n<li>For shiny, healthy leaves regularly wipe the leaves with a soft cloth soaked in lukewarm water.<\/li>\n<li>For good growth and healthy leaves feed the plant with a liquid fertiliser once a month in summer.<\/li>\n<li>Plants benefit from pruning. Cut off the top growth when the plant reaches its desire height.
