When many teenagers are still discovering who they are, 14-year-old Keah Rose is already using music to make a difference. The Durban North singer-songwriter is proving that age is no barrier to making an impact through music.<\/p>\n
Keah Rose\u2019s debut single, Only Fourteen<\/em>, isn\u2019t simply another catchy pop song. Co-written by Keah and her mother, it\u2019s an honest reflection on growing up, staying true to yourself and having the confidence to say \u2018not yet\u2019 in a world that often expects young people to grow up far too quickly.<\/p>\n
For Keah, the song began with a conversation close to home.<\/p>\n
\u201cOnly Fourteen was inspired by the idea that people often underestimate teenagers because of their age,\u201d she says. \u201cI wanted to show that even though I\u2019m 14, my dreams, emotions and experiences are real, and that age shouldn\u2019t stop anyone from chasing what they love.\u201d<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a message she hopes will encourage other young people to believe in themselves.<\/p>\n
“I hope they realise that their age doesn’t define what they’re capable of. If you have a dream, don’t let anyone tell you you’re too young. Believe in yourself, work hard and never give up on what you love.”<\/p>\nPhoto: Courtney Warren Photography<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Although she’s already built an impressive performance r\u00e9sum\u00e9, Keah is refreshingly grounded. She laughs that life still revolves around homework, exams and all the usual challenges of being in Grade 9.<\/p>\n
“Definitely! Life is hard with school, homework, exams, and I still have to do all the boring stuff too. Singing is a huge part of my life, but I’m just a normal teenager trying to balance everything and enjoy being 14.”<\/p>\n
When she’s not singing, you’ll most likely find her spending time with friends or enjoying every opportunity to spoil her nieces and nephew, who she adores. It’s a reminder that behind the growing music career is simply a teenager who loves family, laughter and making memories.<\/p>\n
Music has always been part of who she is. Her family recognised her natural ability from an early age, and years of vocal training, performances and competitions have helped shape the confident young artist she is becoming.<\/p>\n
Her achievements already extend well beyond the classroom. After performing six different genres of solo vocals in Johannesburg, Keah was selected by the South African Championships of Performing Arts (SACOPA) for two consecutive years to represent South Africa in America as part of the national team. She has also made it through to Nationals again this year, which takes place in September. Along the way, she\u2019s achieved outstanding Trinity College of London vocal examination results and recently progressed through the virtual auditions for America\u2019s Got Talent.<\/p>\nPhoto: Courtney Warren Photography<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Working with Kyle Deutsch on her debut single has been a career highlight, giving Keah the opportunity to learn from one of the country\u2019s respected musicians while continuing to develop her own distinctive sound.<\/p>\n
Despite those achievements, stepping onto a stage still comes with butterflies.<\/p>\n
“People would be surprised to know that I still get nervous before every performance. Even though I love being on stage, I always get butterflies, but the moment I start singing, they disappear.”<\/p>\n
Her faith also plays an important role in keeping her focused. “My faith is a huge part of who I am. It reminds me to stay humble, be kind and trust God’s plan, even when things don’t go the way I expected. It helps keep me grounded and gives me strength to keep going.”<\/p>\n
Looking ahead, Keah dreams of one day performing on America’s Got Talent, sharing her music with audiences around the world and continuing to write songs that connect with people.<\/p>\n
For now, though, she’s happy to be exactly where she is, chasing a dream with courage, humility and a voice that’s already leaving a lasting impression.<\/p>\n
