For Mrs TJ Zodwa Kula, education is about people, possibility and creating an environment where young people can learn, grow and build meaningful futures. At Elangeni TVET, that belief is helping shape an institution focused on the skills and opportunities of tomorrow.<\/em><\/p>\n

There is a good chance that when most people think of a Rector and Principal, they don’t immediately picture someone stepping onto a tennis court, singing for the sheer joy of it or settling into an intimate jazz concert. But for Mrs TJ Zodwa Kula, known to those around her as Zodwa, these moments are part of what keeps her grounded.<\/p>\n

Tennis has been a passion since her youth, and the lessons she has learnt on the court, persistence, focus, discipline and resilience, have stayed with her long after the match is over. She is also a lifelong learner and is currently studying towards her PhD, while singing gives her another way to express herself and connect with people.<\/p>\n

For Zodwa, learning is not something that ends when you reach a particular position or receive a qualification. It is a way of living. It is also at the heart of the way she leads Elangeni TVET.<\/p>\n

After a decade at the helm of the College, Zodwa is proud of how far Elangeni TVET has come, but she is equally focused on where it is going. Her vision is rooted in a simple belief: education should create opportunities and equip young people with skills they can use in the real world.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that leadership is ultimately about people,\u201d she says. \u201cEvery learner, lecturer and employee has a story, potential and aspirations.\u201d<\/p>\n

That belief influences the way Zodwa approaches leadership. She describes herself as a straight talker, but says she does not believe leadership requires aggression or confrontation. Instead, she places enormous value on listening.<\/p>\n

Her mother taught her the importance of hearing different versions of a story before reaching a conclusion, a lesson that has stayed with her.<\/p>\n

\u201cListening allows you to understand not only what people say, but sometimes what they are not saying.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is an approach that has helped shape her vision for Elangeni TVET, where the focus extends beyond simply delivering qualifications.<\/p>\n

Building more than a qualification<\/strong><\/p>\n

For Zodwa, the purpose of TVET education is to give young people practical pathways into the world of work, while also developing the confidence, competence and adaptability they need to create opportunities for themselves.<\/p>\n

Elangeni TVET places a strong emphasis on practical, occupational and industry-relevant learning. Students are encouraged to understand the theory behind what they are learning, but also to develop the ability to apply that knowledge in real situations.<\/p>\n

\u201cEducation should not only prepare a young person to pass an examination; it should prepare them to perform, contribute, innovate and create opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Industry exposure is an important part of that philosophy. Through partnerships and practical learning opportunities, students can gain a better understanding of what employers expect and where their skills fit into the economy.<\/p>\n

The College’s Aircraft Maintenance Mechanics programme, developed in partnership with Starlite Aviation, is one example of how theory and practical experience can work together to prepare students for specialised careers.<\/p>\n

For Zodwa, this connection between education and the workplace is increasingly important as industries evolve.<\/p>\n

Young people should be watching developments in technology, advanced manufacturing, engineering, renewable energy, agriculture, aviation and the digital economy. Elangeni TVET is already exploring opportunities to expand its manufacturing capabilities, including shoe making, while plans are also underway to develop three to five new aviation-related programmes to meet industry demand.<\/p>\n

The goal is not simply to predict what the future of work will look like, but to help young people develop the skills to participate in it.<\/p>\n

Keep learning, keep adapting<\/strong><\/p>\n

Technology is changing the workplace at an extraordinary pace, and Zodwa believes young people should not be intimidated by it.<\/p>\n

Digital literacy will be important, but so will critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving and adaptability. Just as importantly, she believes human skills such as communication, empathy, judgement and the ability to connect with others will remain invaluable.<\/p>\n

\u201cTechnology should not be something young people fear; it is something they must learn to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Zodwa, remaining relevant means being prepared to continuously learn, unlearn and adapt.<\/p>\n

It is a philosophy she applies to herself, too. Her own continued studies, leadership responsibilities and involvement in the broader TVET sector reflect her belief that growth does not stop once you reach a position of leadership.<\/p>\n

And she wants Elangeni TVET to keep growing with purpose.<\/p>\n

Over the coming years, her vision includes strengthening infrastructure, expanding occupational programmes, embracing technology and developing local and international partnerships that can create greater opportunities for students and staff.<\/p>\n

International relations are an increasingly important part of this vision, creating opportunities for knowledge exchange, collaboration and greater global exposure.<\/p>\n

Zodwa is also proud of initiatives such as the College’s Annual Staff Awards, Inaugural Research Conference and TVET Talks with Elangeni Podcast, as well as fundraising initiatives that are contributing towards the rehoming of the KwaMashu Campus and upgrading facilities at the Artisan and Skills Development Centre.<\/p>\n

For her, these developments are not simply markers of institutional growth. They are part of creating an environment in which people can do more.<\/p>\n

Finding your own path<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perhaps one of the most important messages Zodwa has for young people is that they do not need to have their entire future mapped out at 18.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you don’t know exactly what career you want, do not panic,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Instead, she encourages school-leavers to start by understanding themselves, their interests, strengths and values. Research different careers, talk to people working in fields that interest you and ask questions.<\/p>\n

She also believes young people should look beyond traditional definitions of success. There are exciting opportunities in technical, occupational and emerging fields, and the right career path may not always be the one that initially seems obvious.<\/p>\n

When choosing where to study, Zodwa recommends investigating three things carefully: the programmes offered, the institution’s accreditation and the opportunities available after graduation.<\/p>\n

Look at industry partnerships, workplace opportunities, student support, facilities and the overall environment. Don’t choose an institution simply because your friends are going there or because it is considered popular.<\/p>\n

Choose somewhere that can give you the knowledge, skills, support and opportunities you need to build the future you want. And once you arrive, take responsibility for your own success.<\/p>\n

Nobody will remind you about every deadline, test or assignment. Developing discipline, managing your time, asking questions and seeking help when you need it are all part of becoming an independent learner and preparing for the workplace.<\/p>\n

A future worth building<\/strong><\/p>\n

For all the plans and ambitions she has for Elangeni TVET, Zodwa’s philosophy ultimately comes back to people.<\/p>\n

Her admiration for leaders such as Thuli Madonsela reflects her belief that it is possible to be firm without being aggressive, to listen while still making difficult decisions and to lead by serving and inspiring others.<\/p>\n

It is also why the lessons of tennis resonate so strongly with her. On the court, there is little point dwelling on the previous point. You recover, refocus and prepare for the next one.<\/p>\n

Perhaps that is an apt way to look at education, too. There will be setbacks. There will be uncertainty. Some plans will change. New opportunities will emerge.<\/p>\n

What matters is having the resilience to keep learning and the courage to take the next step.<\/p>\n

For the young person who is worried that they have no idea what their future holds, Zodwa has a simple message: \u201cDo not allow fear to deceive you into believing that you have no future.\u201d<\/p>\n

Start where you are. Understand your strengths. Ask questions. Seek guidance. Explore your options. Then take the next step.<\/p>\n

That is the future Zodwa is working towards at Elangeni TVET, an institution where education is not simply about earning a qualification, but about developing the skills, confidence and resilience to build a life, contribute to society and create opportunities for others.<\/p>\n
