Carmen Kennedy has spent 19 years turning a simple Christmas party into a cherished tradition of giving, involving her family and community while supporting 1000 Hills Community Helpers.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

There are some traditions that become part of a family\u2019s Christmas without anyone quite remembering when they began. For Carmen Kennedy, Christmas has meant something a little different for the past 19 years: a convoy of cars, hundreds of toys, bags of sweets and chips, a group of family and friends, and a valley full of excited children.<\/p>\n

What started as a simple desire to do something for a vulnerable community has become an annual tradition that has touched not only the lives of hundreds of children, but those of Carmen, her family and the many young people who have joined her along the way.<\/p>\n

This year, Carmen will once again head to 1000 Hills Community Helpers in Cato Ridge for its Christmas celebration, continuing a tradition that began when her daughter, Georgi, was just 18 months old.<\/p>\n

\u201cI could have thrown one party 19 years back and then walked away,\u201d Carmen says. \u201cBut 1000 Hills Community Helpers had such an impact on my life back then that it naturally continued every year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carmen\u2019s instinct to give back was shaped long before that first Christmas party. Growing up in Winston Park, she became involved with The Smile Foundation through St Mary\u2019s DSG, and after school spent a year working in an orphanage in Spain as part of a Rotary exchange.<\/p>\n

Those experiences stayed with her, and when she became a mum, she wanted her own children to understand that there were communities living very different lives to theirs, and that helping others was something you did, rather than simply something you talked about.<\/p>\n

A friend introduced her to Dawn Leppan and 1000 Hills Community Helpers almost 20 years ago. At the time, the organisation was operating from a church and its preschool had around 150 children.<\/p>\n

Carmen was impressed by how well organised the charity was, with systems in place and accountability at every level. More importantly, she found somewhere she felt she could make a meaningful contribution.<\/p>\n

That contribution began with a Christmas party.<\/p>\n

Georgi was on her mum\u2019s hip at that first celebration, shy and overwhelmed by the unfamiliar surroundings. By the time she was three, she was helping Carmen lay out sweets and chips and playing with the children. When Adam came along, he joined in too. And so did the tradition.<\/p>\n

The children at 1000 Hills Community Helpers have grown in number over the years. The preschool now serves about 500 children from birth to six years old. And, as the organisation grew, so did Carmen\u2019s involvement.<\/p>\n

One of the traditions she has deliberately maintained is collecting good-quality pre-loved toys throughout the year, cleaning and repairing them and then allowing each child to choose their own gift rather than receiving a wrapped present.<\/p>\n

It is a small detail, but one Carmen says has become one of the biggest joys of the day.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have a choice, as small as it is,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Friends, families and schools from across the Upper Highway have contributed toys over the years, while Sunstoppers, the family business Carmen runs with her husband, Dean, along with her mum, siblings, extended family and friends, have helped provide the sweets, chips and drinks.<\/p>\n

In recent years, Umhlanga Rotary and The Angel Network Durban have also joined the effort by collecting and donating toys. And just like that, what began with Christmas has spilled into the rest of the year.<\/p>\n

Educational toys, hundreds of puzzles, children’s books, baby supplies and clothing have been donated to the organisation. Carmen\u2019s children have grown from little helpers handing out snacks to young adults volunteering in the community, from working in the soup kitchen and helping with meals on wheels to joining outreach visits to vulnerable families and assisting where they can at the medical clinic.<\/p>\n

Four years ago, Carmen also began making sandwiches with Adam and boys from Kearsney College as part of their community service. What started small has grown into a feeding initiative in which Kearsney boys now make thousands of sandwiches every few months for distribution through meals on wheels.<\/p>\n

The Christmas party may have been the beginning, but it was never the end. For Carmen, one of the most meaningful parts of the journey has been watching young people become involved and discovering for themselves the value of helping others.<\/p>\n

She has watched her own children grow up alongside the organisation and says their experiences have changed their outlook on life.<\/p>\n

Georgi is now studying at Stellenbosch University and continues to volunteer at vulnerable schools with two friends, spending time doing art and playing with children. Adam is in Grade 11 at Michaelhouse, and remains involved in community projects.<\/p>\n

\u201cI see it in my kids,\u201d Carmen says. \u201cIt has given them both purpose and added so much more meaning to their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Carmen, that is one of the greatest lessons of all.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow do you teach your children important life lessons if you aren\u2019t doing them yourself?\u201d she asks.<\/p>\n

She believes everyone has something they can contribute. It doesn’t have to be money or a grand gesture. Sometimes it is simply identifying where help is needed and considering what skills, time or resources you have to offer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve learnt that when communities of people come together with like-minded values and integrity, beautiful outcomes are always the reward.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year’s celebration will take place in early December, and the need has grown considerably since that first party 19 years ago.<\/p>\n

Carmen and her family are still collecting good-quality new or pre-loved toys, as well as sweets and chips. With the family having recently moved to the North Coast, she is particularly keen to hear from families, schools, businesses and corporates who would like to get involved.<\/p>\n

There will no doubt be the familiar trail of cars making its way into the valley, this time carrying hundreds of toys and bags of treats. There will be singing, dancing and children proudly showing off what they have learnt at school. There will be family and friends, old faces and new ones, and the familiar excitement that has become part of Carmen\u2019s December.<\/p>\n

And somewhere in that crowd will be a generation of young people who have grown up learning that giving back is not something reserved for special occasions. It is something you do.<\/p>\n

For Carmen, 19 years on, it is simply something you keep doing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have met the most wonderful strangers along the way, all willing to help,\u201d she says. \u201cIt has always made me remember that humankind is mostly always for the good of others.\u201d<\/p>\n

And perhaps that is the most beautiful legacy of all.<\/p>\n
