In the past, the South African Book Fair has presented a stellar programme brimming with contentious topics and this year’s fully virtual event promises nothing less.

So, what can you look forward to? Among the Fair’s highlights is The Magic Tent, which hosts a range of activities for children and teens. From toddlers to grandparents, all are welcome to visit the Magic Tent and to revel in the affirmative power of books and reading − for the first time or the thousandth time.

Book and word devotees will not want to miss the Keorapetse Kgositsile Poetry Café with Hear My Voice. It is a performance-poetry evening dedicated to the legendary Keorapetse Kgositsile. Hosted by Mutinta Bbenkele, African stars Bokgang Maragelo, Mongane Wally Serote, Yomi Ṣode, Zizipho Bam, Khadija Tracey Heeger and Aja Monet team up for an unforgettable experience.

Among the new highlights of this year’s event is a bespoke Battle of the Bookclubs Literature Quiz with the semi-final and final taking place during the Fair.

Author-led panel discussions offer a feast for the mind and soul of those interested in feminism, race & identity, crime, relationships and erotica, food & food security, travel, economics, science fiction and more. With topics ranging from white privilege to masculinity, misogyny and African psychology, Black Lives Matter, intergenerational dialogue, the role of literary journals in Africa and so many others, this year’s programme are provocative, topical and unmissable for people across the globe – especially those with an interest in African narratives and the world we now all inhabit.

An entry ticket for only R50 gives you access to the full three-day event taking place between 11-13 September and featuring an engaging, stimulating and entertaining programme and the Fair’s signature industry marketplace. Details: www.southafricanbookfair.co.za
