Finally, we can travel locally again. And for those of you who live in KZN, or who plan on being there anytime over the next few months, here’s a lovely outing. It’s a special day trip, which can easily be turned into an overnighter if you’d prefer.

Emdoneni Lodge  – which is in the heart of Zululand between two Big Five game reserves and the iSimangaliso Wetlands (a World Heritage site), is a privately owned, multi award-winning 3-star Lodge with an abundance of wildlife and natural vegetation.

Just two-and-a-half hours from Durban, their ’Escape-into-the-bush’ day trip special package is something really special.

After your arrival welcome drink, you’ll be whisked away to the Zululand Cat Conservation project to learn more about endangered cats. The Cat Tour starts at 10.30am (you’ll need to be at Emdoneni by 10am) and is hosted by an experienced guide who’ll share all the exciting facts about the cats and the project in an informative talk. Here you’ll get up-close and personal (but not too personal as physical interaction is not allowed) with South Africa’s endangered wild cat species.  The heart of Emdoneni is its Zululand Cat Conservation project. Owners Louis and Cecillie Nel established the project to facilitate environmental education and conservation of cheetah and other smaller wild cats. They, and their team have cared for and released four cheetahs, four African wild cats, 13 caracals and 22 Servals back into the wild. After that, there’s a light lunch, with bubbly and chocolates, and then a relaxing, 60 mins full body massage at the Emdoneni Spa.

The cost is R1 050 a person, (40 per cent discount on the normal rate), and there’s nothing stopping you from extending your day trip into a longer stay-over experience, starting from R730 a person per night sharing including breakfast. You can, if you’re staying over, enquire about the other activities … think traditional Zulu dancing shows, hikes, safaris, whale watching (seasonal), bird watching and more.
