Spruce up your morning coffee

There’s nothing like that first sip of your morning cuppa joe. But sometimes that same cup every morning can start to lose its effect, and this is when it is time to start looking for exciting new options to make getting out of bed a little easier, especially in Winter.

Giving yourself something different to drink in the morning, while still including the all-important ingredient – coffee – can help to start the day off on an exciting note. Whether it’s changing the milk to nut-based milk, or perhaps a flavoured syrup instead of the usual sugar, this can all make a difference.

Thokozane Radebe, brand manager for coffee brand Douwe Egberts suggest you can add cinnamon, maple syrup, nutmeg, whipped cream, pumpkin pie spice or sweetened condensed milk to help get the show on the road.

Although not all of these will be everyone’s “cup of tea” trying out different variations can give you the taste you are looking for. The Douwe Egberts range is the perfect companion when wanting to enjoy a simple cup of coffee, or when you are looking for a new additive to spice things up.

Herewith two ideas from Douwe Egberts to give you a new coffee taste … plus an indulgent brownie recipe:

Instant Mocha

You’ll need: 2 Tbsp cocoa powder; 1 tsp Douwe Egberts Pure Gold (or Kenya Mocha for an added Mocha taste); sugar, according to your taste; hot milk

How to:

Add the cocoa powder, coffee and sugar to taste in a mug. Add a splash of milk and stir to form a paste. Once you have a consistent paste add the rest of the hot milk. Stir and serve.

Cinnamon spice coffee

You’ll need: Douwe Egberts Espresso Style; 1 ½ Tbsp cinnamon syrup; whipped cream; ground cinnamon

How to:

Pour the cinnamon syrup into a large mug. Add the prepared coffee into the mug and stir it. Once combined, sprinkle some cinnamon and top with whipped cream.

Pure indulgence brownies

A little treat to enjoy with your coffee during the day.

You’ll need: 4 eggs; 230g melted butter; 2 heaped tsp Douwe Egberts Pure Indulgence; 140g flour; 400g sugar; 60g cocoa powder; pinch of salt; ½ tsp baking powder; 2 tsp vanilla essence

How to:

Grease a non-stick baking pan and preheat the oven to 175°C.

Place the melted butter and sugar into a bowl and mix until well combined. Then add in the eggs and vanilla. Mix well until lighter in colour.

Once this is well combined, sift in the dry ingredients – flour, Douwe Egberts coffee, cocoa powder, salt and baking powder. Gently fold in these ingredients until just combined. If you overmix, this will affect the texture of your brownies.

Spread the mixture into the pan, and place in the oven for 20-30 minutes. If you prefer your brownies a little firmer, keep them in the oven for a little longer.
