Well, let us fill you in&#8230;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>This weekend the Kyalami 9 Hour, one of the biggest motoring events on the sporting calendar, will be taking place at the iconic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit.<\/p>\n<p>The International GT Challenge (IGTC) Series Powered by Pirelli, is a GT3 and GT4 sportscar-based endurance series that has run at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit since 2019. The series visits five continents with the Kyalami round from 23-25 February featuring as the second round of the five-race 2023 season.<\/p>\n<p>The main event, is set to be contested by over 20 top international and local GT3 and GT4 race teams, all battling for overall and class victories in the nine-hour endurance race.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12735\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12735\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12735 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/K9H-Medium-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12735\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kriya Gangiah, one of motorsport\u2019s leading female voices in South Africa and host of this year\u2019s Kyalami 9 Hour.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kriya Gangiah, one of motorsport\u2019s leading female voices in South Africa and host of this year\u2019s Kyalami 9 Hour, understands that there are many who are still a little bit unfamiliar with the ins and outs of South Africa\u2019s biggest international endurance race and shared seven basic facts about endurance racing ahead of this weekend\u2019s big race:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Kyalami 9 Hour forms part of the\u00a0Intercontinental GT Challenge Powered by Pirelli which features five rounds on\u00a0five continents, with South\u00a0Africa being the second stop on the calendar.<\/li>\n<li>Endurance races are time based. Drivers\u00a0try to cover as much distance as possible in a fixed time. For the Kyalami 9\u00a0Hour, racers will, over the span\u00a0of nine hours, try and complete as many laps\u00a0as possible and the team that covers the longest distance will be crown the\u00a0winners.<\/li>\n<li>Endurance races are more about\u00a0teamwork. For the Kyalami 9 Hour there needs to be three drivers per team, with\u00a0each driver having a maximum\u00a0drive time of three hours and forty-five minutes\u00a0across the nine hours. The drivers can swap at any time; however, a driver can\u00a0only do a continuous\u00a0\u201cstint,\u201d of three hours at a time. Each driver also needs\u00a0to drive through the pitlane every 65mins.<\/li>\n<li>The race starts with a rolling\u00a0start, this means that the cars will be led by the safety car in grid order\u00a0around the track. After a certain number of laps\u00a0the safety car will enter the\u00a0pitlane and the green flag is waved, and the race will start as the cars cross\u00a0over the start\/finish line.<\/li>\n<li>Since the races are so long, pit\u00a0stops are critical, and the amount of time spent refueling and changing tires\u00a0can make or break a victory. This is really\u00a0where the team strategy also comes\u00a0into place.<\/li>\n<li>Each race consists of different classes. This means there will be drivers of different racing abilities racing in the Kyalami 9 Hour. Therefore, the pro drivers, pro-am drivers, silver and invitational drivers will be ranked together respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Balance of performance ensures that all the different manufacturers and engines\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 compete on equal terms. Meaning a nibble Porche can go up against a mighty Mercedes.
