According to Forbes, top of the 2024 Whole Foods list is \u201cputting the \u2018plant\u2019 back in \u2018plant-based\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the rise of flexitarian and vegan diets, many meat-free alternatives have flooded the market,\u201d explains the news magazine. \u201cHowever, it seems consumers are not necessarily interested in animal alternatives made from a long list of products they do not understand, and would rather eat veggie burgers and other products made of vegetables and ingredients they can understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsumers are looking for healthier and more sustainable products,\u201d agrees Adam Leman, lead fermentation scientist at the Good Food Institute in Washington, speaking on cultivated meat alternatives in the Hob Hill Gazette of August last year. \u201cMycoprotein (protein from fungus) requires far less caloric input to produce one calorie for human consumption as compared to animal protein. Additionally, it\u2019s high in fibre, very low in fat and has no cholesterol.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mycoprotein he speaks of is derived from mycelium, the root system of mushrooms, which contains all nine amino acids needed to form a complete protein. It can be grown quickly and is set to take the alt-meat category by storm.<\/p>\n<p>Culinary professionals from the US Specialty Food Association\u2019s Trendspotter Panel are in full agreement with the fungi forecast, declaring that \u201cMushrooms are mushrooming!<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMushrooms for taste, mushrooms for texture, mushrooms for health benefits,\u201d they add, saying that in the coming months \u201cpeople will discover mushrooms in every food and beverage category\u201d \u2013 think social media already going wild for mushroom coffee!<\/p>\n<p>Netherlands\u2019 Innova Market Insights actually noted the significant rise in fungi consumption since 2018 to name mushrooms one of their most up-and-coming ingredients of \u201924.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly it\u2019s past time to start seeking out simpler plant-based products with fewer ingredients and additives, or take the leap straight to nature\u2019s easiest meat substitute \u2013 the Big Brown mushroom, also known as a portabella. Light on the pocket, packed with nutrients, and always available in supermarkets, mushrooms can be treated just as you would a burger patty or a piece of steak. No stress or fuss, and always delicious.<\/p>\n<p>And even if you don\u2019t want to make your mushrooms the centrepiece of every meal, they\u2019re always happy to take on a side roll. In fact, the fungi side game is really strong, from <a href=\"https:\/\/protect-za.mimecast.com\/s\/c3PPCElQ2khkjjRpTN-2Uq?domain=rebrand.ly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Greek Mushroom &amp; Potato Salad<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/protect-za.mimecast.com\/s\/SvXwCGZK2mT299jAs7HeTu?domain=rebrand.ly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mushroom Gravy<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/protect-za.mimecast.com\/s\/M176CJZX2pTgoo0KhzVsvC?domain=rebrand.ly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coconut Creamed Greens &amp; Mushroom<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other trends set to impact the dinner table this year:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food as medicine<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is especially appealing among young people, whether for disease prevention or cure.
