There\u2019s something very satisfying about a garden where you can \u2018forage\u2019 for those tasty salad leaves, edible flowers, bulbs or berries.<\/p>\n<p>Edimentals are generally low maintenance plants too. Once established, perennial vegetables like artichokes, asparagus, and rhubarb need far less attention than seasonal annual vegetables. They\u00a0 have deeper, well established roots that make them more drought tolerant. So too are shrubby mediterranean herbs like lavender, rosemary, fennel, and thyme.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t discount leafy vegetables like kale, Swiss chard, beetroot and lettuce that are the easiest of crops to grow and can be used throughout the garden for their colourful and textured leaves. In winter garden peas provide a mass of bee-attracting blooms while in summer red fruited chillies and dark aubergine eggplants are attractive shrubs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Edimentals to start from seed in autumn<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1268139\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1268139\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1268139 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-23-02-2024-gardening-grow-your-own-photo-2-420x560.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"560\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1268139\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fennel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Garden fennel <\/strong>( <em>Foeniculum vulgare) <\/em>and Bronze fennel (<em>Foeniculum vulgare \u2018Rubrum\u2019 purpureum<\/em>) are tall, striking foliage plants\u00a0 (with all the herbal uses).\u00a0 The leaves and seeds are strongly aromatic, adding a subtle aniseed flavour to fish, poultry and vegetable as well as spicy Indian and Italian dishes.\u00a0 Grow in full sun in soil that drains well. Cut back when the leaves start to fade and it will shoot up again.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1268140\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1268140\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1268140\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-23-02-2024-gardening-grow-your-own-photo-3-420x280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"280\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1268140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kale \u2018Dinosaur\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Kale<\/strong> is regarded as a Superfood for its high nutritional content. The curly or ruffled leaf varieties are attractive foliage plants that thrive in cold weather, which improves the flavour of the leaves.\u00a0 <strong>Kale \u2018Vates Blue Curled\u2019<\/strong> grows low to the ground and leaves can be harvested from 25 to 30 days for baby leaves or 50 to 60 days for mature leaves. <strong>Kale \u2018Dinosaur\u2019 <\/strong>has long, narrow\u00a0 ruffled leaves with an earthy, nutty flavour. plants grow 90 to 100cm high and wide, making it a garden feature.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1268141\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1268141\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1268141\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-23-02-2024-gardening-grow-your-own-Photo-4-420x560.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"560\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1268141\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sugar Snap garden peas.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Garden peas<\/strong> are the most nutritious of vegetables. Sow seed directly into rich, deep soil that drains well. The dwarf or semi dwarf varieties like \u2018Greenfeast\u2019\u00a0 don\u2019t require staking, although it helps increase the yield. Runners that grow up to 2m high, like \u2018Sugar Snap\u2019 can be trained up an obelisk as a garden feature to show off their white flowers that attract the bees. \u00a0Water regularly, and feed with a liquid fertiliser once a month.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1268142\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1268142\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1268142\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-23-02-2024-gardening-grow-your-own-Photo-5-420x344.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"344\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1268142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frilly cut and come again lettuce.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Frilly leafed lettuce<\/strong> varieties make super borders in the flower garden.\u00a0 Plants don\u2019t\u00a0 take up much room and grow easily, provided they are planted in rich soil, in a sunny spot, watered regularly and fed monthly with Margaret Roberts Organic Supercharger. The Kirchhoffs seed range includes \u2018lettuce salad mix\u2019\u00a0 of red and green loose leaf lettuce varieties. Calendula \u2018Pacific Beauty Mix\u2019 offers a sunny mix of apricot, yellow, persimmon and orange flowers. Use the fresh petals sprinkled over salads and stir fries and in cakes and desserts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1268144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1268144\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1268144\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-23-02-2024-gardening-grow-your-own-Photo-7-420x257.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"257\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1268144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Artichoke \u2018Green Globe\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Artichoke \u2018Green Globe\u2019 (<em>Cynara scolymus<\/em>)<\/strong> can be sown in autumn or spring. It is a short lived perennial that is most productive in its second and third years. Plant in full sun in free draining soil. Water deeply and fertilise in spring. To produce big, succulent buds, artichokes need plenty of water while the buds are forming, especially during a hot dry spell. They will tolerate frost but not where temperatures are consistently below minus in winter.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1268145\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1268145\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1268145\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/02\/Alice-Coetzee-23-02-2024-gardening-grow-your-own-Photo-8-420x315.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1268145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rhubarb\u2019 Victoria\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Rhubarb \u2018Victoria\u2019 <\/strong>is used as a fruit but is actually a perennial vegetable belonging to the sorrel family. Only the stalks of Rhubarb are eaten as the leaves can be poisonous. Once established, rhubarb will reward with many years of delicious stalks.
