They produce masses of tiny single or double petunia-like flowers, don\u2019t like to be over watered or fussed over and are vigorous growers that quickly fill a space, whether in the garden, a container or hanging basket<\/strong>.<\/h4>\n<p>Most varieties have self-cleaning blooms that make them even easier to care for. Trim your plant every now and then to keep it compact.<\/p>\n<p>Cali\u2019s like \u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plenty of sun if grown as garden plants. Those in pots or hanging baskets do best with morning sun and afternoon shade.<\/li>\n<li>Soil that drains well and watering when the surface of the soil starts to feel dry.<\/li>\n<li>For healthy leaves and more flowers, feed with a liquid fertiliser like Margaret Roberts Organic Supercharger once a month, or twice a month at half strength.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Get the look<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This planting (picture above) is ideal for a sunny corner. It is like a three tiered wedding cake with a delicious confectionary of pink and white flowers.<\/p>\n<p>The top layer is a container of snow white \u2018Easy Wave\u2019 petunias (or use Cali Cabaret White) that will grow up and then cascade over the edge of the container.<\/p>\n<p>The second tier is a raised bed edged with rustic logs to retain the soil and is filled with cali\u2019s. These include the pink single blooms of \u2018Cabaret\u2019, Conga and \u2018Cha-Cha\u2019 and the double blooms of MiniFamous (centre), bordered by soft mounds of gypsophila \u2018Gypsy\u2019 pink.<\/p>\n<p>The third tier is ground level and is a white border of Calibrachoa \u2018Conga\u2019 white, Euphorbia \u2018Glitz\u2019, and Verbena \u2018Firehouse\u2019 white.<\/p>\n<p>For a simpler version make a garden bed with a container of white Easy Wave petunias in the centre as a focal point. Around it, plant Cali\u2019s in various shades of pink and with single and double flowers. Mix them with the delicate gypsophila \u2018Gypsy\u2019 for texture. Complete the bed with a border of white Verbena \u2018Firehouse\u2019 or Euphorbia \u2018Glitz\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Take your pick<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1288015\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1288015\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1288015\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/05\/Alice-Coetzee-07-06-2024-gardening-were-planting-calibrachoa-picture-2-420x630.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"630\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1288015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Calibrachoa Cabaret \u2018Light Pink Kiss\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>We are spoilt for choice when it comes to calibrachoa varieties. Calibrachoa \u2018Cabaret\u2019 is a standard for cali\u2019s with the widest colour range. It is compact and mounded, flowers well even in low light conditions and flowers stay open for longer. Look out for \u00a0\u2018Light Pink Kiss\u2018, \u2018Strawberry parfait\u2019 and \u2018Hot Rose\u2019 as well as the very popular \u2018Midnight Kiss\u2019 with a dark starred centre and purple outer petals.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Conga\u2019 is naturally compact and keeps it rounded, \u2018cup-cake\u2019 shape. It has a range of vivid bi-colour blooms, that include \u2018Pink Kiss\u2019, \u2018 Rose Kiss\u2019\u00a0 and \u2018Diva Pink\u2019.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1288012\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1288012\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1288012\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/05\/Alice-Coetzee-07-06-2024-gardening-were-planting-calibrachoa-picture-3-420x588.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"588\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1288012\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Calibrachoa Cha-Cha Diva \u2018Hot Pink\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For novelty appeal there is Cha-Cha, with large two tone blooms like Diva \u2018Hot Pink (pictured) Apricot and \u2018Red Kiss\u2019. Plants are more vigorous than Cabaret and great for garden beds and large containers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1288013\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1288013\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1288013\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/05\/Alice-Coetzee-07-06-2024-gardening-were-planting-calibrachoa-picture-4-420x338.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"338\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1288013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Calibrachoa MiniFamous \u2018Pinktastic\u2019 with Gypsophila \u2018Gypsy Pink\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The semi-trailing Cali \u2018MiniFamous\u2019 (25 -38cm high and wide) has become a popular plant for containers, hanging baskets and raised beds. The gorgeous double blooms are a real novelty and the variety used in the planting (above) is double \u2018Pinktastic\u2019. There\u2019s also double \u2018Pinkmania\u2019, \u2018Orangetastic\u2019 and a pure white.<\/p>\n<p>Gypsophila \u2018Gypsy\u2019 pink is a perfect companion plant, being suitable for bedding or mixed containers. Plants grow 20cm high and 30 cm wide, and like cali\u2019s, grow best in full sun, in soil that drains well. Their flowers are white, pink or deep rose.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Add white for sparkle<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1288014\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1288014\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1288014\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2024\/05\/Alice-Coetzee-07-06-2024-gardening-were-planting-calibrachoa-picture-5-420x525.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"525\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1288014\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Verbena \u2018Firehouse\u2019 white.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Verbena \u2018Firehouse\u2019 White is another long flowering bedding and container plant that likes the same growing conditions as cali\u2019s: sun, well-drained soil and not too much water. \u00a0It is a consistent bloomer that doesn\u2019t cycle in and out of flower.
