{"id":19968,"date":"2024-07-01T08:00:13","date_gmt":"2024-07-01T06:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/joburg-north\/?p=19968"},"modified":"2024-06-28T12:41:21","modified_gmt":"2024-06-28T10:41:21","slug":"goal-junkie-james-miller-on-the-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/joburg-north\/blog\/2024\/07\/01\/goal-junkie-james-miller-on-the-move\/","title":{"rendered":"Goal junkie James Miller on the move"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>It\u2019s only uphill from here on out for twenty-six-year-old trail runner James Miller, who is steadfast on a path to international glory.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Young South African James Miller has his eyes firmly set on achieving international trail-running success after coming seventh in a six-day, 252km trail run billed as the \u2018toughest footrace on earth\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The 26-year-old, who grew up in Johannesburg and studied at Stellenbosh University, competed in the gruelling Marathon Des Sables crossing Morocco\u2019s Sahara Desert in April, beating more than 600 other men to earn his top 10 spot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowing it was one of the hardest stage races in the world appealed to my competitive nature, and made me want to do it,\u201d Miller said. Battling heat of up to 50 degrees, sandstorms, and dunes, while carrying his food, was a test of fortitude.<\/p>\n<p>On the 85km stage, Miller started to urinate blood and lost time while using the emergency tracker to contact the race medics. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to have medical assistance which would cost me a time penalty, so once they had examined me, I was able to continue.\u201d It took him 9.5 hours to complete the stage which had a cut-off time of 35 hours, and he walked the last four kilometres. \u201cAnother contestant overtook me, and that was probably the darkest part of my race.\u201d He spent four hours in the medical tent after finishing, trying to reduce his body temperature in an ice bath and was able to rest the following day before the next stage.<\/p>\n<p>Passionate about all sports and encouraged by his father Andrew, who often competes in cycle and running events alongside his son, Miller only started to consider trail running and ultra-trail events seriously in 2021 after winning the 23km Ultra Trail Cape Town. \u201cThere were several favourites for the win, but when I crossed the finish line, no-one knew who I was,\u201d Miller said of the race.<\/p>\n<p>Having lived in London for the past two years and working full-time as a business development manager has not been a boon to training \u2013 although he did achieve a top 200 position in last year\u2019s London Marathon. \u201cLondon is much too flat, and often when I come back to South Africa for races, such as last year\u2019s Otter African Trail Run, I am also seeing customers so my head isn\u2019t in the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, Miller\u2019s dedication to his training has seen some impressive results, such as winning the United Kingdom final of the Salomon Golden Trail World Series twice, clinching bragging rights to represent the country at the World final. \u201cI competed in the Golden Trail World Series final in Madeira in October 2022, racing between 21km and 30km a day, with elevation of up to 2 900m, over five days, against some of the best runners in the world.\u201d A month later, he achieved 12th position at the 55km Ultra Trail Cape Town. He was unable to take up the second Golden Trail opportunity in Italy due to a visa issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always been a runner, someone with a good cardio vascular engine, and academics always took a back seat to sport. I completed the Cape Town Marathon in a sub-three which is great &#8211; the more races I do and the better my times, the more I am encouraged to enter bigger, more serious events.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With an international ranking as an elite runner, Miller is often invited to attend and scores a free race entry, but as an unsponsored athlete, has to cover his own travel costs.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019d love to turn running into a career but I need sponsorships,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>His goals for the remainder of the year are to focus mainly on shorter races of up to 30km where he can put his explosive power of youth to good use. \u201cI plan to do the Golden Trail series again as this allows me to travel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He has unfinished business with the Otter African Trail Run and will return in October to tackle the 42km race. \u201cI\u2019m looking for a top eight position this year after last year\u2019s 16th position. I have something to prove,\u201d Miller said.<\/p>\n<p>In the years to come, the young athlete aspires to compete at the prestigious UTMB which traverses 171km with 10 000m elevation through Italy, Switzerland, and France.
