This approach can accommodate a greater variety of plants, which wouldn\u2019t be as attractive in larger landscapes.<\/p>\n<p>Given that our garden spaces are getting smaller, this gives gardeners much more scope to express themselves and their love of colourful flowers.<\/p>\n<p>Add depth by layering the planting, as in this small space (picture above) that uses containers at the back of the bed for height, then plant-filled loffel stones for medium height, and compact bedding plants for a carpet of colour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Try these<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1350862\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1350862\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1350862\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-17-01-2025-gardening-gardenscaping-photo-3-420x560.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"560\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1350862\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Verbena \u2018Peppermint\u2019, Coreopsis \u2018Uptick Gold\u2019, carnation \u2018Oscar\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<ul>\n<li>Verbena \u2018Firehouse Peppermint\u2019 has sparkling red and white flowers and spreads up to 55cm. It reblooms quickly and appears to flower non-stop, which attracts the butterflies.<\/li>\n<li>Bidens Coreopsis Uptick Gold \u2018is a tough little perennial with vivid golden-yellow flowers. Being easy growing, not fussy about soil and with mildew-resistant foliage, it is a good plant for beginner gardeners.<\/li>\n<li>Dianthus \u2018Oscar Red Star\u2019 is a pot carnation that also works well in the garden because it is a compact, well branched plants that produce plenty of fragrant flowers. Plants like well-drained soil and can grow in sun or semi shade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Like a fine wine, the appeal of well-aged gardens.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Did you know that an inviting well cared for garden can boost your property\u2019s value? According to research, potential buyers showed a strong preference for established plants and trees, which favours the use of hardy perennials and shrubs that don\u2019t require as much attention.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1350863\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1350863\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1350863\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-17-01-2025-gardening-gardenscaping-photo-4-420x492.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"492\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1350863\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Perennial mix of canna, salvia and gaura.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dense planting (as above) with quick growing perennials like cannas, salvia and gaura, give the garden a full, established look and they are long blooming plants that can be relied upon to look good throughout summer.<\/p>\n<p>In line with the more relaxed look, don\u2019t worry about plants that aren\u2019t perfect. Just keep them trimmed or cut back after flowering followed by an application for fertiliser to bring on the next flush of flowers.<\/p>\n<p>Most perennials are drought tolerant and\u00a0 deep watering once a week is all they need in summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Try these <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The tall growing Salvia Mystic Spires Improved ( 60cm) or the more compact Salvia \u2018Mysty\u2019 45 cm high) both deliver spikes of true blue flowers non-stop during summer. These heat hardy salvia grow best with plenty of sun and mix well with other heat tolerant<\/li>\n<li>For compact gaura in shades of dark pink or white there\u2019s gaura \u2018Belleza\u2019 that grows upright with short flowering stems that don\u2019t fall or flop open. Plant in full sun in ordinary garden soil that drains well.<\/li>\n<li>Red canna \u2018Canova\u2019 in the centre provides a focus for this planting. \u2018Cannova\u2019 is not an invasive species and it reaches a garden height of 70 to 120cm but remains neat and compact. It is an easy to grow option for gardens that require heat tolerant plants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Lush is lovely<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1350864\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1350864\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1350864\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-17-01-2025-gardening-gardenscaping-photo-5-420x497.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"497\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1350864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">mixed bed coleus, celosia, Bidens and argyranthemum.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What looks more established than a foliage dense garden, especially if the foliage plants come in vibrant shades of green or with colourful leaves. In gardens that are a mix of sun and shade, the most useful plants are those that tolerate both.<\/p>\n<p>The range of sun Coleus offers a wide palette of colours as does Sunpatiens. The shrubby Begonia \u2018Dragon Wings\u2019 is a\u00a0 lush, vigorous perennial \u00a0reaching a height of 60 to 80 cm and spread of 40 to 45 cm. It is best grown in filtered sun or shade but can tolerate full morning sun.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1350866\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1350866\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1350866\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-17-01-2025-gardening-gardenscaping-photo-6-420x628.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"628\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1350866\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Begonia \u2018Dragon Wing\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For sunnier parts of the bed, Celosia\u2019s flame like flowers can be used to lead the eye while the daisy-like yellow Bidens \u2018Golden Empire\u2019 and pink argyranthemum \u2018Lollies Marshmallow\u2019 bring a lighter, airier feel to the border.<\/p>\n<p>Other sun and shade tolerant garden plants include fuchsia, lobelia, alyssum, hosta, Plectranthus \u2018Mona Lavender\u2019, brachyscome and cranesbill geranium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Try these<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1350865\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1350865\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1350865\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-17-01-2025-gardening-gardenscaping-photo-7-420x629.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"629\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1350865\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coleus \u2018Coleosaurus\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Coleus \u2018Coleosaurus\u2019 \u00a0is a dramatic foliage plan with dark red, gold-green scalloped leaves. These plants make a statement yet are easy growing and heat tolerant. It grows in full sun or partial shade, but the more sun it needs, the more frequently it should be watered.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1350867\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1350867\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1350867\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2025\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-17-01-2025-gardening-gardenscaping-photo-8-420x280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"280\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1350867\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Celosia \u2018Ice-cream\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Celosia \u2018Ice Cream\u2019 is a dwarf variety that displays colourful 6-cm plumes that look like tiny flames. It is striking when planted en masse in the garden.
