Home-grown herbs and edible flowers add flavour, flair, and freshness straight to your table &#8230;<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Grow it yourself<\/strong><br \/>\nConsider oregano, rosemary, thyme, basil, dill, and sage for a sunny spot. Mints (try spearmint and catnip), coriander, parsley, rocket, chives, fennel, and lemongrass grow in shadier spaces. Lemon verbena, bay, and curry leaf plants can all grow very big, but can be trimmed to fit a small area or container. Avoid sprays or pesticides if you\u2019re going to eat them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ideas:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Fill gaps between stepping-stones with thyme.<br \/>\n\u2022 Edge a flowerbed with chives which make a dainty display, especially when the papery mauve flower heads appear.<br \/>\n\u2022 Give white roses a petticoat of lavender bushes.<br \/>\n\u2022 Plant up a flowerbed with frilly white dianthus and mounds of nutmeg geranium.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bountiful basil watermelon salad<\/strong><br \/>\nSimply cut watermelon into chunks, then add sliced red onion, a bit of crumbled feta and a few fresh basil leaves. Make a simple dressing of two tablespoons olive oil and one tablespoon lemon juice with a pinch of salt. Serve with prosciutto or salmon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20313\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Coriander-pesto-natural-light-white-plate-or-glass-jar-400x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>A zingy twist on pesto<\/strong><br \/>\nCoriander pesto adds bright, herby flavour to veggies and grains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ll need:<\/strong> Juice of 1 lime \u2022 2 cloves garlic, crushed \u2022 50g peanuts \u2022 100g coriander (leaves + stalks) \u2022 6\u20138 Tbsp olive oil<\/p>\n<p><strong>To make: <\/strong>Soak garlic in lime juice for 20 minutes. Blitz peanuts until finely chopped. Add coriander, garlic and lime juice, blend, then drizzle in oil until it becomes pesto.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Freeze your herbs for later<\/strong><br \/>\nTear or chop hearty herbs (rosemary, sage, thyme, tarragon, oregano). Pack into ice cube trays, cover with olive oil, and freeze. Once frozen, slip into resealable freezer bags.<br \/>\nPerfect for: Starting sauces, saut\u00e9ing veggies, drizzling pizza, brushing over grilled meats, or tossing into pasta.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20312\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/freeze-herbs-in-olive-oil-in-an-ice-tray-400x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The ultimate green sauce<\/strong><br \/>\nChimichurri<br \/>\nMake it at least 30 minutes in advance of using. Store in a glass jar in the fridge for up to one week, but bring it to room temperature before using.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ll need:<\/strong><br \/>\n1 cup flat-leaf parsley (stems removed) \u2022 1\/4 cup fresh oregano leaves \u2022 3 cloves garlic (peeled and roughly chopped) \u2022 1 small jalape\u00f1o pepper (deseeded and chopped) \u2022 2\/3 cup olive oil \u2022 1\/4 cup red wine vinegar \u2022 1 tsp salt \u2022 1\/2 tsp smoked paprika<\/p>\n<p><strong>To make:<\/strong> Pulse parsley, oregano, garlic, and jalape\u00f1o in a food processor until minced. Transfer to a bowl, add oil, vinegar, salt, and smoked paprika. Adjust seasoning.<br \/>\nUses: Marinade for meat, drizzle for grilled veggies, dipping sauce for bread, or a pasta salad dressing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-20314\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Chimichurri-in-natural-light-setting-white-bowl-without-the-red-chilli-flakes-400x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Cucumber and dill salad<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ll need:<\/strong><br \/>\n2 cucumbers (thinly sliced) \u2022 \u00bd red onion (thinly sliced) \u2022 2 Tbsp fresh dill, chopped \u2022 2 Tbsp olive oil \u2022 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar \u2022 Salt and pepper<\/p>\n<p><strong>To make:<\/strong> Toss cucumbers, onion, and dill in a bowl. Season with salt, pepper, and lemon zest. Scatter petals and herb leaves over the butter.
