You can feel it in the air and the tingle in your fingertips, that says it is time to start planting. Away with the dusty brown shades of August. Go bold, bright and beautiful with spring flowers\u2026and most of them are indigenous.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some ideas!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The base colour in most gardens is green, which provides a great backdrop for a splash of colour here and there or if you want to go big.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Plant up containers and use them as accents or focal points, to decorate a seating area or to provide pops of colour throughout the garden.<\/li>\n<li>Enhance a focal point, statue, birdbath or bench with a cluster planting of flowers around the feature.<\/li>\n<li>In larger gardens or on pavements, plant up bold displays by grouping flowers in blocks, stripes or swathes of colour.<\/li>\n<li>Line pathways with low growing flowers to lead the eye.<\/li>\n<li>Create a restful corner by weaving together flowers in soft, harmonious colours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23088\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23088\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-23088\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-28-08-2026-gardening-spring-flowers-photo-2-400x350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"350\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23088\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nemesia Nesia \u2018Magenta\u2019,\u2019 \u2018Fantasy Pink\u2019 and \u2018Denim\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nemesia Nesia is a hybrid of our indigenous nemesia and the striking colour range includes magenta, bright yellow, tangerine and bi-colours \u2018Bananaberry\u2019 \u2018Tutti Frutti\u2019 and \u2018Fantasy Pink\u2019. The large yet delicate blooms are lightly fragrant and are carried above the compact, upright growing plants that have shiny green leaves.<\/p>\n<p>They are good in containers and look gorgeous massed as a border in garden beds or lining a pathway. They grow in semi shade.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23089\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23089\" style=\"width: 364px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23089 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-28-08-2026-gardening-spring-flowers-photo-3-364x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23089\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Osteospermum Akila \u2018Sunset Shades\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Osteospermum (Cape Daisies) are at their showiest in spring and the \u2018Sunset Shades\u2019 of osteospermum Akila blend harmoniously to produce a bold display in pots or in landscapes. \u2018Akila\u2019 is a hybrid that is very compact, 40 to 50m high and wide. Containers of these eye catching blooms will introduce instant colour into the garden and provide visual anchors within a bed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good to know:<\/strong> Repetition of a single colour or a mix like \u2018Sunset Shades\u2019 throughout the garden produces a feeling of continuity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23090\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23090\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23090 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-28-08-2026-gardening-spring-flowers-photo-4-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23090\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Diascia \u2018Diamond\u2019 fuchsia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Diascia \u2018Diamond\u2019<\/strong> produces masses of delicate blooms that make a feature of hanging baskets and mixed containers. This neat, compact plant is also a good filler as a groundcover or as an edging plant, especially along pathways because it spills over, softening the hard edges.<\/p>\n<p>One plant will fill a medium-sized hanging basket and three in a container or larger hanging basket. Plants do best with morning sun and need fertile, well composted soil that drains well. \u00a0Regular watering will prevent flower drop and scruffy growth.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23091\" style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23091 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-28-08-2026-gardening-spring-flowers-photo-5-286x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stoechas \u2018Primavera\u2019 purple.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This spring flowering stoechas lavender \u2018Primavera\u2019 continues flowering well into summer, unlike other stoechas that taper off after spring.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Primavera\u2019s large flower heads are a magnet for bees and butterflies. Plants are sturdy and bushy (40cm high and wide), and stand out when planted in mass, in groups or in a large container.<\/p>\n<p>Plant in ordinary garden soil that drains well in full or partial sun. Water deeply and let the soil dry out moderately before watering again. Fertilise monthly \u00a0and trim down by 50% after each flush to encourage fresh flowers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23092\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23092\" style=\"width: 329px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23092 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-28-08-2026-gardening-spring-flowers-photo-6-329x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"329\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23092\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">E3 Easy Wave petunia\u00a0 \u2018Sweet taffy Mix\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Petunias are almost all-year-round flowers but they are at their best in spring. There are so many varieties to choose from but one of the easiest garden varieties is the \u2018E 3 Easy Wave\u2019 that grows fast, flowers continuously but doesn\u2019t need dead heading or cutting back. They tolerate heat and cooler conditions and the weather resistant single blooms attract bees.<\/p>\n<p>The mounded plants have a controlled spread of 60 to 80cm, making them suitable for small spaces. Like all other petunias, Easy Wave grows best in full sun, in well-drained soil.
