The fiction titles include Just Like You by Nick Hornby (a charming – and sharp – love story about what it means to fall for someone who is your polar opposite); Atomic Love by Jenny Fields (which has Anne Patchett quoting “Science, love, espionage, and a heroine who carves a strong path in the world of men. There is nothing left to want”); Eli’s Promise by Ronald H. Balson (a powerful, superbly crafted tale … with meticulous historical detail, the novel is equal parts heart breaking and life affirming, with themes that are as relevant today as ever); A Girl Made of Air by Nydia Hetherington (a poignant story of regret and redemption, brilliantly interlaced with magic and folklore).

There’s also Islands of Mercy by Rose Tremain and Monogamy by Sue Miller (which has received rave reviews); and The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman (compelling … mystery fans are going to be enthralled).

Also on the November list … A Wilder Life ( Dr Joan Louwrens has written a memoir that is a poignant and often funny story of a life lived to the full); Competitive Edge by Cyrus Rogers (for people who want to make changes in their personal and professional lives in order to beat the opposition and take home the gold); Disruption Amplified by Abdullah Verachia (a punchy and timely commentary on issues that are of strategic importance in our time); and Kwanele, Enough! by Andy Kawa (an emotional roller coaster of fear and courage).

Whew … still going. Lives of the Stoics by Ryan Holiday (Thomas Hull says “There is philosophy for school and philosophy for life. This book is about the lives of men and women who lived their words and shows you how to do the same); Livewired by David Eagleman (unaccountable, jaw-dropping quality of genius according to the Observer); Promised Land by Karl Kemp (which makes sense of the land conflict, closely attending to the history of possession and dispossession); Sea Change by Craig Foster and Ross Frylinck (which plunges the reader into wonder, a place of deep magic that is sometimes shocking .. Craig’s photos suggest ‘Tolkien underwater on speed’).

Showcasing her talents as a listener, author of The Tattooist of Auschwitz Heather Morris gives us Stories of Hope (a series of tales about the remarkable people she has met along her writing journey and the stories they shared with her);  The Book of ProVerb by Tebogo Thekisho, better known as ProVerb ( who first caught South Africa’s attention in 2005 with the release of his debut hip-hop album … this is his memoir); The Unlikely Mr Rogue by Evelyn Groenink (the story of a good man, an unlikely man, a quiet man, determined to use SARS to fund the post-liberation nation-building, and his downfall at the hands of his enemies and a scurrilous Sunday Times).

Over to young adults and children. The Eldest Curses 2: The Lost Book of the White by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu (a delightful dive back into the Shadowhunter universe, filled with all the banter and friendship goals Shadowhunter fans have come to know and love);  Lies Like Poison by Chelsea Pitcher (a complex and twisted thriller with well-developed characters); Breathless by Jennifer Niven (a bittersweet summer romance with refreshingly honest discussions about love, sex, family, and the conflicting emotions caused by change); and The Trials of Apollo 5: The Tower of Nero by Rick Riordan (a clash of mythic intrigues and centuries of pop culture to thrill die-hard and new fans alike).

Buy the books in store, online, via phone-in (great if you want to chat to bookseller … and they deliver to your door within 36 hours), or via Uber Eats (a book and a snack .. who could ask for more?).
