It’s all oysters and bubbles and flash … with a view!
Stylish sundowners and swanky entertaining has been taken up a level – 57 levels, to be precise – with the opening of Africa’s highest urban bar and Joburg’s sexiest space.
Alto234 (Alto for height in Latin, 234 for metres high) on the rooftop of The Leonardo unapologetically boasts being aspirational and exclusive and is rapidly becoming the destination of choice for highflyers … for the city view (best selfies ever!), the experience, and the mini bottles of Moët from the Moët Mini Machine. The what? Oh … casual shrug … using a Moët & Chandon token, you can get a bottle, at perfect temperature, right out of the exclusive-to-Alto234 vending machine. Boujee to the max!
Not into bubbles (can we even be friends?), there’s an exceptional wine and spirits list and edgy cocktails and a luxury tapas menu … think bite size individual portions of oysters, caviar, pear and coriander dust, or tamarind duck breast with roasted plum and hazelnut, or tuna wonton with avo and lemon marmalade.
The crowd is, as you can expect, well-heeled and glam. So make a booking, slip on your Louboutins and get there.
The experiences … There’s an Afternoon Experience (from 12.30 to 3.30pm), the Sunset Experience (4pm to 6.30pm) and a Night Lights experience (7 to 11pm). Experiences cost R300 a person (entrance only). It’s completely open air, so take weather into consideration, no children after 6pm, open Tuesday to Sunday. Since there’s limited seating, booking is obviously essential.
