Best known for her exquisite French macarons and cheesecakes, Lizelle\u2019s passion for baking shines through everything she makes.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Klerksdorp in the North West, Lizelle now lives in Alberton. \u2018I always said I would never move to Johannesburg,\u2019 she admits, \u2018but in 1993, I relocated here.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Before fully committing to baking, she spent 10 years working as a travel agent, a career that took her around the world. \u2018I can confidently say that this is where my taste developed for different types of food,\u2019 she shares.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>The pressure cooker experience<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Lizelle\u2019s baking journey has been filled with exciting challenges. She recalls, \u2018I was up against four male chefs. The concept of the show was \u2018a new restaurant\u2019, so if you win, you get money to start your own restaurant. When I think back to my experience on the show, I could say that it was more intense than MasterChef.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The producer told me, \u2018It\u2019s not only to make you win, it\u2019s to make you grow. Through the journey on the show, it\u2019s made me grow.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The pressure was like being in a pressure cooker,\u2019 says Lizelle. \u2018The person who walked in there was not the same person who walked out.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The experience also taught her that anything is possible. \u2018I never thought I would get onto the show because there were many entries and they only chose five chefs and five restaurant managers.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Lizelle was inspired to enter because she loves the pressure of TV cooking shows. \u2018I found that business has been quiet the last two years and like many other businesses, the industry is struggling,\u2019 she explains. So it was a challenge for me competing on the cooking show,\u2019 she says. But she took the risk and already sees the difference it has made, both personally and professionally.<\/p>\n<p>Her journey on Drukkoker came at a pivotal time. \u2018It was important for me to reinvent myself because of my divorce. Often when people get divorced you get a settlement but you still have to survive afterwards.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>One of her most overwhelming moments on the show was the first challenge, where contestants had just one hour to create a signature dish. Lizelle chose a spicy autumn trio of French macarons &#8211; pumpkin spice, bacon and maple syrup, and citrus flavoured. To add to the pressure, managers came around for a speed dating-style chat while she was preparing the dish.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018From the very beginning, it was hell\u2019s bells,\u2019 Lizelle shares. \u2018You\u2019re in a kitchen you\u2019ve never worked in before, you don\u2019t know where everything is, and the ingredients were surprises.\u2019 Despite this, she bonded well with the other competitors. \u2018One of the best things is walking away inspired by such great chefs,\u2019 she adds.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Inspiring women through baking and entrepreneurship<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The experience gave Lizelle confidence not just in the kitchen but in life. \u2018Even in my day-to-day life as a single mother and entrepreneur, I know now \u2018I\u2019ve got this\u2019.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_23688\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23688\" style=\"width: 567px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23688 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/joburg-south\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/06\/IMG_6475.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"567\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/joburg-south\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/06\/IMG_6475.jpg 567w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/joburg-south\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/06\/IMG_6475-400x298.jpg 400w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/joburg-south\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/06\/IMG_6475-563x420.jpg 563w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/joburg-south\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/06\/IMG_6475-80x60.jpg 80w, https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/joburg-south\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/18\/2025\/06\/IMG_6475-265x198.jpg 265w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-23688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lizelle Solomon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She is passionate about inspiring women. \u2018I see a lot of women who are brilliant in what they do but they don\u2019t see it in themselves, and that\u2019s one of the reasons I started my bakery, it\u2019s to inspire women to believe in themselves.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Lizelle jokes that the pressure on Drukkoker was even higher than the pressures she faces in real life. \u2018The pressure on the show was a little more than my daily life but I enjoyed it thoroughly.\u2019 It made her realise her own capabilities and taught her to never give up. \u2018I\u2019ve reinvented myself in many aspects of life, especially in business.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018At 55, I\u2019m still learning,\u2019 she proudly says. \u2018When I walked into Drukkoker, I thought \u2018this is me\u2019, but I grew some more. I think in life we should never become stagnant.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Her message is clear: \u2018Never stop living. I have always been someone who carries on despite any hardships or obstacles.\u2019<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Daily rituals for staying calm under pressure<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Lizelle\u2019s daily ritual to stay calm is simple but powerful. I see women my age going through menopause and just giving up on themselves and life. I wish for women to enjoy life more, take care of themselves, and find time to do the things they love.
