The Johannesburg SPCA (JSPCA) is urging pet owners to stay vigilant and informed about common household and garden plants that may pose serious risks to animals, as part of its ongoing efforts to raise awareness in the community about responsible pet care.<\/p>\n

Why plants can be dangerous<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Plants produce natural compounds to help them survive in the wild, but those same compounds can irritate your pet’s mouth and stomach, or even damage their organs.<\/p>\n

If your pet has chewed on a plant and you notice any of the following symptoms, contact your vet immediately:<\/p>\n

\u2022Drooling or pawing at the mouth<\/p>\n

\u2022 Vomiting or diarrhoea<\/p>\n

\u2022 Lethargy or depression<\/p>\n

\u2022 Difficulty swallowing<\/p>\n

\u2022 Tremors or seizures<\/p>\n

Common toxic houseplants<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Fiddle Leaf Fig<\/strong><\/p>\n

This plant\u2019s sap can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and skin irritation in pets.<\/p>\n

Monstera Deliciosa (Delicious Monster)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Contains insoluble calcium oxalates, making it highly toxic to dogs and cats. It can cause mouth swelling, drooling, and vomiting.<\/p>\n

Snake Plant (Sansevieria)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Popular for its toughness, but its saponins can lead to nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea if ingested.<\/p>\n

Aloe Vera<\/strong><\/p>\n

Widely used for human skin care, but dangerous for pets. It can cause vomiting, lethargy, tremors, and changes in urine colour.<\/p>\n

String of Pearls<\/strong><\/p>\n

This South African native succulent is toxic when eaten, and its sap can irritate the skin. Watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, and lethargy.<\/p>\n

Cannabis<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cannabis poisoning in dogs has become one of the most common toxic plant-related emergencies vets encounter. Symptoms include incoordination, tremors, seizures, and in severe cases, coma.<\/p>\n

Extremely dangerous<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Cycads<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cycads are among the most dangerous plants for dogs. Every part \u2013 seeds, leaves, and roots \u2013 contains cycasin, a toxin that attacks the liver. Dogs are particularly drawn to the seeds.<\/p>\n

If you suspect cycad ingestion, treat it as an emergency and call your vet immediately.<\/p>\n

Symptoms include vomiting, jaundice, weakness, seizures, and liver failure.<\/p>\n

Lilies<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lilies are life-threatening to cats \u2013 even the pollen. Every part of the plant can cause kidney failure.<\/p>\n

Other toxic garden plants include azaleas, daffodils, tulips, chrysanthemums, and oleander.<\/p>\n

Safer alternatives<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you’d like to keep plants without the worry, consider areca palm, calathea, spider plant, bamboo palm, or African violets \u2013 all non-toxic to dogs and cats.<\/p>\n

If your pet eats a toxic plant<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u2022 Stay calm and call your vet’s emergency number<\/p>\n

\u2022 Clip a sample of the plant to take with you<\/p>\n

\u2022 Do not induce vomiting unless your vet instructs you to<\/p>\n

\u2022 Do not use ipecac or salt \u2013 these can cause additional harm<\/p>\n

Be ready to tell your vet what was eaten, how much, and what symptoms you’ve observed.<\/p>\n

Even if your pet seems fine initially, their condition can worsen as the toxin is metabolised \u2013 so don\u2019t wait.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
