Even if the leaves have fallen, a mixed container or hanging basket of flowers and foliage extends this magical season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thrillers, fillers and spillers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thrillers, fillers and spillers is the term coined for mixes in containers or hanging baskets. The thriller is the central feature plant, like a pelargonium, petunia, or other eye-catching plant. The filler provides the bulk and is usually compact, either flowers or foliage. Spillers are planted around the edge and are trailing or cascading plants.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thrillers<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22230\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22230\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22230 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-15-05-2026-gardening-container-gardening-photo-2-400x289.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"289\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BeautiCal \u2018Sunset Orange\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>BeautiCal \u2018Sunset Orange\u2019 is the ideal feature plant because it flowers abundantly like a calibrachoa but with large petunia sized flowers that are highly weather resistant. The mounded plant grows 30 cm high and 40cm wide. Make sure it gets plenty of morning sun and bright light throughout the day.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22231\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22231\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22231 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-15-05-2026-gardening-container-gardening-photo-3-400x337.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"337\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pelargonium \u2018Champion\u2019 red.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pelargonium \u2018Champion\u2019 has large double flowers in various shades of red and flamingo pink. This robust plant flowers for longer\u00a0 than most other pelargoniums and combines the best characteristics of both trailing and upright pelargonium\u2019s.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22232\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22232\" style=\"width: 398px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22232 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-15-05-2026-gardening-container-gardening-photo-4-398x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22232\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nemesia Nesia \u201cTangerine\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>For a light delicate fragrance, consider the bright yellow and orange nemesia Nesia \u2018Tangerine.\u2019 \u00a0The large blooms are set off by shiny green foliage. This upright but compact plant does best in semi-shade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good to know<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select a container with good drainage holes and broad enough to accommodate the roots of the various plants.<\/li>\n<li>Use good quality potting soil and mix in a slow-release fertiliser.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fillers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For contrasting texture nothing beats ornamental grasses, and other colourful foliage as fillers. Plant the fillers on either side of the thriller plant.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22233\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22233\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22233 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-15-05-2026-gardening-container-gardening-photo-5-400x334.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"334\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heuchera \u2018Melting Fire.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>For dramatically coloured foliage you can\u2019t do better than the burgundy foliage of Heuchera \u2018Melting Fire.\u2019 Also known as Coral Bells, this spreading plant likes soft shade. It\u2019s easy to grow and needs little care except trimming to keep it in shape.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22234\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22234\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22234\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-15-05-2026-gardening-container-gardening-photo-6-400x353.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"353\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22234\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carex \u2018Bronco\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Compact Carex varieties like \u2018Bronze Curls\u2019, and \u00a0\u2018, \u2018Bronco\u2019 don\u2019t crowd out other plants by overgrowing their space. Their arching bronze growth softens a mixed planting. They grow in full sun or partial shade.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22235\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22235\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22235 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-15-05-2026-gardening-container-gardening-photo-7-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22235\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sedum \u2018Atlantis\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sedum Atlantis is a variegated sun-loving groundcover that is extremely drought tolerant and needs very little care. The leaves form small perfect rosettes, and each leaf is deep green in the centre with a wide creamy yellow margin that is its most noticeable feature. It will also cascade out of hanging baskets and containers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good to know:<\/strong> Plants in containers and hanging baskets do best in a sheltered position that receives at least four to six hours of sun daily, if possible, with morning sun and afternoon shade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spillers<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22236\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22236\" style=\"width: 309px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22236\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-15-05-2026-gardening-container-gardening-photo-8-309x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"309\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22236\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Calibrachoa Cha-Cha Diva Apricot.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Calibrachoa are semi- trailing plants that produce masses of tiny single flowers. Calibrachoa \u2018Cha-Cha Diva\u2019 has large cascading blooms and is a vigorous grower, quick to spill over the edge of the container. They do best in a sunny container, with regular watering and feeding. Look out for Cha-Cha Diva Apricot and Hot Pink.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22237\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22237\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22237 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-15-05-2026-gardening-container-gardening-photo-9-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22237\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lobelia \u2018Curacao Blue\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lobelia \u2018Curacao Blue\u2019 is a semi-trailing lobelia with a spread of 20 to 30cm. It is fast growing and can be kept tidy with a light trimming, which also helps to generate new growth and flowers. It likes evenly moist but not soggy soil and grows in partial shade.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22238\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22238\" style=\"width: 286px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22238\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Alice-Coetzee-15-05-2026-gardening-container-gardening-photo-10-286x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22238\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Verbena \u2018Firehouse\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Verbena \u2018Firehouse\u2019 forms a mound of flowers that easily fills a hanging basket or patio planter. New flowers are opening as the old ones die. The foliage is tough and disease resistant. Place in a position that receives morning sun and afternoon shade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Good to know<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keep the soil consistently moist.
