Time to break out the lederhosen and dirndls and host your own Oktoberfest party at home! Set up a beer tent in your garden, hang a few blue and white banners, stock up on German beers and serve pretzels, sausages like bratwurst or knackwurst, eisbein, roast chicken, potato salad or sauerkraut. It\u2019s not a party without the perfect playlist. Add some authenticity to the mix by playing Ein Prosit to get everyone in a happy mood\u2026 To end your shindig on a sweet note, we suggest you whip up a batch of apple strudel. Wunderbar!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Chef Johan Engelbrecht\u2019s Apple Strudel<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Serves 6<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ll need: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>125g flour \u2022 1 pinch salt \u2022 70g water \u2022 1 tbsp oil \u2022 3 apples \u2022 40g sugar \u2022 60g finely grounded rusk crumbs \u2022 2 pinches of cinnamon \u2022 25g almond flakes \u2022 25g raisins \u2022 1 tsp lemon zest \u2022 50g melted butter \u2022 Powder sugar for sprinkling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Preheat the oven to 180\u00b0C. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.<\/p>\n<p>Sift flour in a bowl and beat together with salt, water and the oil. Form a ball with the dough mixture, wrap with cling film and prove for two hours.<\/p>\n<p>Peel the apple and cut into small pieces. Combine with the remaining ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>Put the strudel dough on a floured surface and roll out thinly Then place it on a kitchen towel and pull it even<\/p>\n<p>thinner. Then brush the dough with melted butter. Place the filling onto the lower third of the dough, fold<\/p>\n<p>in the sides and roll tightly by using the towel. Herewith a few tips to get you started.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>As with any themed party, costumes are always recommended. In this case, German costumes are encouraged. That would mean lederhosen for men and a dirndl for women.<\/li>\n<li>When the guests arrive, welcome them with German titles like \u2018Herr\u2019 for the men and \u2018Fraulein\u2019 for the women (\u2018Frau\u2019 if they&#8217;re married).<\/li>\n<li>Set out long tables and beer garden-style benches and string fairy lights overhead.<\/li>\n<li>A white and blue checkered pattern is quite common throughout the festival, so consider using that pattern on your tablecloths, party napkins, streamers and other d\u00e9cor.<\/li>\n<li>Keep appetizers simple\u2014a bowl of pretzels is both authentic and easy.<\/li>\n<li>Remember, Oktoberfest etiquette dictates that you never drink with two hands, so mind your manners.<\/li>\n<li>Roast pork and rotisserie chicken pair nicely with homemade potato salad (or potato dumplings if you\u2019re feeling ambitious). Sausages are also in high demand and include anything from bratwurst to frankfurters.
