Understanding Hygge

From hearty meals and a candlelit ambience, to learning to indulge in the art of coziness, the Danes have coveted ‘hygge’ – a way of living that involves finding joy in the simple things in life. Decorex SA Creative Director, Anita Bloom, shares her interpretation of this growing trend and how you can incorporate elements of hygge into your lifestyle.

Understanding Hygge

Hygge (pronounced ‘hoo-gah’) is a Danish word which describes a feeling or moment of cosy serenity. This trend embraces a more centred, calmer lifestyle where warmth and wellbeing are elevated within our own spaces, allowing us to achieve a continuous sense of comfort and happiness through a form of escapism. In an attempt to create this serene space, natural energy is harnessed through the notion of ‘biomimicry’. This movement emulates nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies within the human world as a way to seek sustainable solutions. Within the arena of interiors, this translates into natural colours, textures and patterns in the home.

My personal style

I would say my style is a combination of minimalistic combined with personal touch. I definitely find myself leaning towards the ‘hygge’ lifestyle of cosy comforts where less is more, with clean, scandi lines and soft, muted down tones. I love to bring in greenery, florals and lots of natural wood mixed with grey and white. I then add a splash of colour through artwork or scatters.

Is Hygge here to stay?

This lifestyle trend is showing no signs of slowing down. It has influenced our homes and lives for a while now but there is no escaping that this minimalistic style will remain the basis of design when it comes to curating our ‘sanctuaries’ in 2019.

How you can incorporate Hygge into your home?

Add natural elements such as wicker chairs, hanging lights, natural colours and whites. Bring in textures and patterns with a throw on your couch or scatter cushions. Add a reading nook to give your home a cosy feel with warm-tone lighting.
