Deciphering thread count …

Good quality bedding goes a long way in promoting a good night’s rest. Soft, warm, luxurious sheets that caress the skin offer better relaxation and comfort, which is bound to aid a better night’s sleep. Considering we spend up to a third of our day in bed, it is essential to invest in quality bedding that keeps you warm without overheating, and that offers superior comfort.

The term “thread count” comes up a lot when we talk about bedding. For those in the know, thread count is an important factor to take into consideration when purchasing new bedding. Even if you are unfamiliar with the term, you would have found yourself comparing bed sheets, and been able to identify which feel softer and of better quality.

Thread count refers to the number of vertical and horizontal threads present per square inch of fabric. In general, the higher the thread count, the better quality and more luxurious the fabric. However, lower thread count bedding also has its place in the home, as these items are often practical, easy to care for options. Great quality sheets range anywhere from 200TC (thread count) to 600TC, and on the rare occasion you may also see sheets with up to 1000TC.

When seeing it on paper, thread count may not seem like much of a big deal. Some may say it’s a case of soft, softer and softest, and that “soft” is sufficient. This assumption is not entirely wrong, however, the difference between a 200TC sheet and a 600TC sheet, for example, it remarkable. Though both may have a lovely texture and be of great quality, the 600TC sheet offers a luxurious feeling that simply cannot be replicated. Once you’ve experienced a higher thread count, there is no going back.

Thread count is an important factor to consider when buying bedding, however, it’s not the only thing to take note of. It’s important to look at the overall quality of the item. In many instances a 200TC sheet that is well constructed and made from good quality cotton may feel like it has a higher thread count. To ensure you’re investing in overall quality, purchase your bedding from a trusted manufacturer, and take note of the make-up of the fabric. Cotton is always the better choice as it is breathable. It keeps the body warm in winter and cool in summer, and does not cause overheating like many acrylic alternatives.

Your budget will likely be the deciding factor when it comes to selecting a thread count. We recommend selecting the highest thread count your budget allows, as purchasing higher quality sheets pay off in the long-term. Not only do they last much longer, but they also retain their crisp appearance for longer.
