Have a sun-safe summer

It’s happened to everyone at least once; the first warm day after a long winter, you think to yourself, “It’s not even December yet, I’m just going to catch some rays for half an hour. What harm could it do? I won’t burn.” Wrong.

Nikki Flanagan from Everysun says that even on cooler days, protection is required. “It’s a daily job, despite the weather, to protect your skin from potential sun damage.”

With the summer holidays around the corner, you’re bound to spend most days in the sun, whether it be on the beach, by the pool, in the garden or in the park, and sun protection needs to be your number one priority.

Here are some tips to help keep you safe in the sun without compromising on the fun:

  • Use a high SPF sunscreen and apply sun lotion every hour to keep your skin protected.
  • Apply sunscreen everywhere.
  • Protect your eyes with sunglasses and make sure it offers both UVA and UVB protection.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Wear a hat to protect your face and keep your hair frizz-free.
  • When you’re not in the water, make sure you’re covered up.
  • Choose a waterproof sunscreen if you’re planning on spending a lot of time in the water.
  • Stay out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day from 11 am to 3 pm.
  • Keep the little ones in the shade as much as possible.

“It’s important to remember that even on a cloudy day you can still get sunburnt,” concludes Flanagan.
