Crafters given free rein in Innibos National Craft Awards

Steel and wood maestro Pierre Fourie has entered a stunning work of art into the Innibos National Craft Awards.

The Krugersdorp resident is one of the hundreds of craftsmen who have submitted their work for adjudication in this free-to-enter competition that recognises innovation and technical excellence. Pierre’s entry is a metal horse’s head that speaks of strength and movement.

“The closing date is 1 May 2020 but already, many impressive entries have been received; the judges face a hard task,” says competition organiser John Anthony Boerma.

“Steel and wood are the mediums I love to work with. I have made a lot of wall art in the past and all these pieces had a three-dimensional feel to them so it was natural I would progress to sculpting,” Pierre says.

His fabulous metal sculptures start with a basic drawing. “I then make a steel frame to get the size and shape of the piece, before sizing, shaping and adding hundreds of individual strands of 4mm steel round bar to create a solid finish.”

Now 34, Pierre says he always loved working with his hands and four years ago, this evolved into a serious passion. “I felt the need to do something to express myself and art was my vehicle of choice.

Entering is easy!

Crafters have until midnight on May 1, 2020, to enter. They need simply take a photo of their entry – next to a matchbox for size of scale, and either email it to [email protected] or send it to 071 621 3597 via MMS or WhatsApp. There is no entry fee.

Ts&Cs apply and can be found on the competition’s Facebook page – https://www.facebook.com/Innibosnationalcraftawards.

Remember to include your name, the town in which you live and your contact details.

Entrants who have not heard from the organisers within 30 days of the closing date must take it as given that they did not make the shortlist for final judging.

The finalists should be available to attend the exhibition opening and prizegiving on June 21, 2020.
