Escape the city to Melville Koppies

Melville Koppies Nature Reserve, also known locally as Melville Koppies, isn’t just a pretty green space really close to one of the trendiest suburbs, and the city centre, of Johannesburg, it is also a World Heritage Site and of major historical significance.

The land that make up Melville Koppies Nature Reserve dates back three billion years and is filled with some of South Africa’s fines indigenous fauna and flora. What makes this area so spectacular is that you can see remnants of the ridges that made up Johannesburg’s landscape before the discovery of gold in 1886, as well as interesting remains (including an iron furnace) from the Iron Age.

There are hiking trails through the reserve, which are fantastic ways to see the beauty without impacting too much on the surrounds. The views from the rocky outcrops are stunning. In short Melville Koppies is glorious place to escape the noise of the city without actually having to leave the city.
