Fortunately, there are enough warm days to start planting spring flowers that don\u2019t mind the cooler weather.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Cape daisy ( Osteospermum)<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1239629\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1239629\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1239629\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2023\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-04-08-2023-gardening-spring-flowers-photo-2-420x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"576\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1239629\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mixed bed of Osteospermum.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Queen of the spring flowers is osteospermum (aka Cape daisy) and the garden centres should soon be filled with flowering plants in pots that can be planted straight into the garden. It is frost tolerant, tough, adaptable and showy in any position that receives full sun or semi-shade.\u00a0 Plant in fertile, well composted soil and add a potassium-rich fertiliser, like Vigorosa, to boost flowering.<\/p>\n<p>Osteospermum \u2018Serenity\u2019 is the most popular garden variety because it is always neat, grows easily and quickly and is heat tolerant. It has the largest range of colours, with some interesting variations like \u2018Blue-eyed Beauty,\u2019 \u2018Blushing Beauty\u2019 with a pink centre, and \u2018Sunset Magic\u2019 where the flowers change colour, giving the impression of a mix.<\/p>\n<p>There is also \u2018FlowerPower\u2019 with its prolific flowers in unique colours and combinations, like \u2018Purple Sun\u2019 that has vibrant orange edges that fade into a purple centre. Plants are compact and upright, retaining their neat shape in a container.<\/p>\n<p>The best osteo for hanging baskets is the spreading Voltage \u2018Yellow\u2019 that easily fills and over-flows baskets. It is the first of the osteo\u2019s to flower. It does best with morning sun and afternoon shade and should be watered daily.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Diascia<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1239630\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1239630\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1239630\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2023\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-04-08-2023-gardening-spring-flowers-photo-3-420x295.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"295\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1239630\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Three pots of Diascia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Diascia is one of our showiest indigenous flowers. Masses of tiny, delicate flowers cover this compact little perennial for several months. They like full sun and suit small gardens.<\/p>\n<p>Diascia \u2018Diamond\u2019 is a hybrid of our indigenous diascia, with extra-large flowers in seven different colours. It is vigorous, upright growing, and produces an abundance of blooms. It works well as a groundcover or border plant, for sunny winter beds as well as in containers and hanging baskets.\u00a0 Fertilise once a month, to boost flowering.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scabiosa<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1239631\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1239631\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-1239631\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2023\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-04-08-2023-gardening-spring-flowers-photo-4-420x632.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"632\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1239631\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scabiosa Butterfly Blue<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These long blooming perennials attract bees and butterflies. They do best planted in full sun but can take partial shade although they may not flower as well. Grow in well drained, light fertile soil.\u00a0 They can be used as edging or in large groups in borders or rock gardens Divide and replant in fresh soil every 3 years.<\/p>\n<p>The three shades of Scabiosa flowers are\u00a0 \u2018Butterfly blue\u2019, \u2018Pink Mist\u2019\u00a0 and \u00a0\u2018Flutter Pure White\u2019. The plants form tidy mounds of deep green leaves with short strong flowering stems. They grow 30cm high and wide and are neat garden flowers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nemesia<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1239632\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1239632\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1239632 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2023\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-04-08-2023-gardening-spring-flowers-photo-5-420x471.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"471\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1239632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yellow Nemesia Inca<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nemesia Nesia\u00a0produces mini snapdragon like blooms in striking colours on top of healthy, shiny green leaves. The plants grow upright, into a rounded plant, 25 to 36cm high and wide.<\/p>\n<p>These are problem free, easy to grow plants that that are not shy to flower. Use them together with other seasonal indigenous flowers like diascia and osteospermum. Plant them in a position that receives full sun in spring and semi-shade in summer. Deadheading and regular watering will help to prolong flowering.<\/p>\n<p>The large range of flower colours includes \u2018Inca\u2019 which is bright yellow as well as \u2018Tutti\u00a0 Frutti which\u00a0 has multicoloured flowers that look as if they have been individually hand-painted.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bacopa<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1239633\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1239633\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1239633 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2023\/07\/Alice-Coetzee-04-08-2023-gardening-spring-flowers-photo-6-420x588.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"588\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1239633\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pink BacopaMegacopa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bacopa (also known as Sutera or indigenous phlox) is a tough, sun-loving indigenous and its trailing nature\u00a0 also \u00a0suits hanging baskets.<\/p>\n<p>Bacopa \u2018MegaCopa\u2019 has pink, white or blue flowers that are double the size of the original species and they glow against the dark green leaves. Plants grow 30cm high and wide; useful as a border or edging plant (space plants 30cm apart). It cascades beautifully if planted in a container, around the base of a taller plant, or in hanging baskets.
