{"id":22517,"date":"2025-11-21T07:43:32","date_gmt":"2025-11-21T05:43:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/?p=20646"},"modified":"2025-11-21T07:51:57","modified_gmt":"2025-11-21T05:51:57","slug":"the-nutcracker-at-montecasino-meet-clara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/joburg-west\/blog\/2025\/11\/21\/the-nutcracker-at-montecasino-meet-clara\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet The Nutcracker&#8217;s Clara!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Different young artists will perform the role of Clara in the upcoming run.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cape Ballet Africa\u2019s brand-new production of\u00a0<em>The Nutcracker<\/em>\u00a0this December at Teatro, Montecasino will feature six young artists sharing the role of Clara; the young girl who receives a magical nutcracker doll for Christmas and goes on on adventures in magical lands.<\/p>\n<p>The rising young performers dancing Clara include three dancers from Johannesburg and three from Cape Town.<\/p>\n<p>From Johannesburg, <strong>Scarlett Haslam<\/strong> is from Parktown North, attends Kingsmead college and has danced in <em>Sleeping Beauty<\/em>. Also from Parktown North, where she trains with the Orlovska Dance Academy, <strong>Maseroka Mothiba<\/strong> received a scholarship to attend the 2025 Summer Intensive Program with the American Academy of Ballet in New York. <strong>Chiara Szabo<\/strong>, from Edenglen, trains with the Carstens-Ireland Ballet School and won a gold medal at the 2024 South African International Ballet Competition.<\/p>\n<p>At 16, <strong>Gia Lipschitz<\/strong> from De Waterkant in Cape Town, has already been dancing for 12 years and is an apprentice at Cape Ballet Africa. Fellow CBA apprentice <strong>Erin Padoau<\/strong> moved to Rosebank in Cape Town from Durban and is a graduate of the Mosa Ballet School in Li\u00e8ge, Belgium. The six chosen performers will each have their turn to present their interpretation of this wonderful role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m extremely excited to be working with choreographer Maina Gielgud \u2013 she\u2019s a gem in the ballet world!\u201d says Lipschitz. Maseroka adds, \u201cPlaying Clara is such a wonderful opportunity, as she gets to go on such magical journeys, while also dancing amazing choreography to such beautiful music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The magical holiday classic features South Africa\u2019s top classical ballet talent alongside acclaimed international guest artists. Denis Cherevychko, from Kyiv, Ukraine, danced for over a decade with the Vienna State Ballet, has undertaken guest performances for some of the world\u2019s major dance companies including\u00a0Paris Opera Ballet, Teatro San Carlo (Italy)\u00a0and\u00a0Hungarian National Ballet and has performed the leading male roles in all of ballet\u2019s classics including\u00a0<em>Swan Lake, Don Quixote, Giselle<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Nutcracker<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Brazillian Arthur Wille is the rising star of the UK\u2019s\u00a0London City Ballet and has danced major roles in\u00a0<em>Giselle, Raymonda, Don Quixote<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Le Corsaire<\/em>.
