Freshly opened and thoughtfully designed, it\u2019s modern, warm and welcoming \u2026 and proudly home to something the West has never seen before. A full drive-through pet shop. Yes, really! Because if you\u2019ve ever walked into Hillside Pets and been met with the friendliest smile, chances are it belonged to Elize van der Merwe \u2013 lifelong animal lover, pet-food expert, devoted rescuer and proud owner of what is now two thriving stores. And if she had to describe herself as an animal? \u201cA Jack Russell,\u201d she laughs. \u201cLoyal, full of heart \u2026 and a little fierce when I need to protect my people.\u201d<\/p>\n

A life built around animals<\/strong>
\nFor Elize, animals were never a hobby; they were her life\u2019s calling. She grew up on a smallholding surrounded by every creature imaginable. And if there was ever a stray animal wandering the road? Elize was the one stopping to help.<\/p>\n

After spending time in the pet food industry, she opened her first Hillside Pets store in Roodepoort in 2005 \u2013 a small shop with a big heart. Nearly twenty years later, the brand has grown into a trusted favourite for families in the area. And now, with the opening of the beautiful Viljoen Street branch in Krugersdop, Hillside Pets enters its most exciting chapter yet.<\/p>\n

A pet store \u2026 with a drive-through!<\/strong>
\nYes, you read that right. Whether you\u2019re rushing between school runs, juggling shopping errands, or simply not in the mood to find parking, Hillside Pets now offers something brilliant. A drive-through service for all your pet essentials. Or a delivery service to your doorstep. Food, toys, treats, bedding, grooming products \u2013 you can receive everything without ever leaving your car or your home!<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s modern, it\u2019s easy, and it just makes life simpler,\u201d says Elize. \u201cAnd when pet parents are less stressed \u2026 pets are happier too!\u201d<\/p>\n

The store itself is equally impressive. Spacious, stylish and filled with warmth. The moment they found the Viljoen Street location, everything fell into place. \u201cIt felt meant to be,\u201d she says. And on November 1, a date chosen in honour of her late stepson, they opened their doors with full hearts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t just sell products,\u201d Elize says. \u201cWe help people take care of their family members, the furry, feathered and sometimes scaly ones!\u201d<\/p>\n

Every staff member is a true animal lover. The kind of person who will kneel to greet your dog before greeting you. They\u2019re trained, knowledgeable and honest. You won\u2019t be upsold or pressured. Instead, you\u2019ll get guidance grounded in years of experience and genuine passion.<\/p>\n

The shelves are stocked with trusted brands like Montego, Jock, Supreme Pet, Trusty Lifestyle, Ideal and Lionel\u2019s Choice, and if they don\u2019t have what you need, Elize and her team will do everything they can to get it for you. Fair pricing is non-negotiable. \u201cI\u2019m not here to take advantage of people. I want to help them care for their pets properly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elize\u2019s real talk: Helping you take the best care of your pets<\/strong>
\nOver the years, she\u2019s seen many trends come and go \u2013 from bearded dragons to skinny pigs to tiny tarantulas. Her advice?<\/p>\n

Buy responsibly, not impulsively. \u201cWhat looks cute in a TikTok video often requires real work,\u201d she laughs.<\/p>\n

Her golden rules for good pet care:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 Feed properly and consistently
\n\u2022 Puppies should stay on puppy food for at least 12 months
\n\u2022 Avoid gravity feeders \u2013 most pets overeat
\n\u2022 No human food or bones (yes, that includes the T-bone, rib bones and spicy leftovers!)
\n\u2022 Choose toys wisely. Strong rubber toys, cooling mats and safe chews over anything that can be swallowed in two seconds
\n\u2022 Healthy treats only, if it\u2019s made for humans, it\u2019s probably not made for them<\/p>\n

And her favourite home remedy? Sore, irritated eyes: Gently wipe with a cooled rooibos tea bag.<\/p>\n

Festive season tips:<\/strong>
\n\u2022 Keep pets calm: Stick to routines, give them safe spaces, and avoid loud crackers
\n\u2022 Travelling? Make sure they\u2019re microchipped, hydrated, comfortable and never left in a hot car
\n\u2022 Festive treats: Stick to vet-approved goodies \u2013 absolutely no sweets
\n\u2022 Holiday hazards: Chocolate, tinsel, fairy lights and bones<\/p>\n

A treat from Elize: Pumpkin & peanut butter dog treats<\/strong>
\nYou\u2019ll need:<\/strong> 2\/3 cup pumpkin pur\u00e9e; 1\/4 cup peanut butter; 2 large eggs; 2 1\/2 \u2013 3 cups whole wheat flour
\nTo make:<\/strong>
\nPreheat oven to 350\u00b0F (180\u00b0C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat; set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat pumpkin pur\u00e9e, peanut butter, and eggs on medium-high speed until well combined, about 1\u20132 minutes.
\nGradually add 2 1\/2 cups flour at low speed, beating just until incorporated. Add an additional 1\/4 cup flour at a time and knead the dough 3\u20134 times until it comes together and is no longer sticky.
\nOn a lightly floured surface, roll the dough to your preferred thickness. Using cookie cutters, cut out the desired shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
\nBake for 20\u201325 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown. Let cool completely.
\nNotes: Baking time may vary depending on the size and thickness of the treats. Serving size will also vary depending on the shapes and cookie cutters used.<\/p>\n
