Juicy, flavour-packed patties meet a tangy homemade sauce\u2026 all tucked into soft little slider buns. It\u2019s the kind of easy, laid-back food that turns a normal weekend into something delicious.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"723\" data-end=\"847\">Perfect for braai days, game days or \u201cjust because\u201d days \u2014 let mushrooms do the heavy lifting while you take all the credit.<\/p>\n<p>Makes \u00b1 12-15 sliders, depending on size<\/p>\n<p><strong>You&#8217;ll need:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Patties:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1 x 400g tin black beans, rinsed, drained and lightly mashed<\/p>\n<p>250g portabellini mushrooms, finely sliced<\/p>\n<p>1 large white onion, diced<\/p>\n<p>500g beef mince<\/p>\n<p>50g panko breadcrumbs<\/p>\n<p>2 Tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped<\/p>\n<p><strong>Homemade tomato sauce:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1 x 400g tin tomato pur\u00e9e<\/p>\n<p>40g brown sugar<\/p>\n<p>3 Tbsp red wine vinegar<\/p>\n<p>\u00bd\u00a0 tsp onion powder<\/p>\n<p>1 tsp celery salt<\/p>\n<p><strong>To serve:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>12-15 white slider buns \/ mini burger buns\u00a0<em>(Many bakeries also call these cocktail buns) <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mayonnaise<\/p>\n<p>Lettuce leaves<\/p>\n<p>Sliced tomato<\/p>\n<p>Sliced red onion<\/p>\n<p>Olive oil, for cooking<\/p>\n<p>Salt and pepper, to taste<\/p>\n<p><strong>To make:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To make the tomato sauce:<\/p>\n<p>Place all the ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat.<\/p>\n<p>Stir gently until everything comes to a light simmer.<\/p>\n<p>Cover and reduce heat to low.<\/p>\n<p>Simmer for 15 minutes for the flavours to develop.<\/p>\n<p>Taste to adjust seasoning.<\/p>\n<p>Cool.<\/p>\n<p>For the patties:<\/p>\n<p>Preheat a braai to medium high heat.<\/p>\n<p>Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a frying pan.<\/p>\n<p>Add the mushrooms and cook until golden brown.<\/p>\n<p>Add the onion and a pinch of salt.<\/p>\n<p>Cook until tender, golden and lightly caramelised.<\/p>\n<p>Place in a large bowl.<\/p>\n<p>To the bowl add the black beans, beef, breadcrumbs and parsley.<\/p>\n<p>Season well with salt and pepper.<\/p>\n<p>Mix thoroughly until very well combined.<\/p>\n<p>Shape mixture into patties.<\/p>\n<p><em>It is a good idea to check the size of your slider buns and make your patties are just larger than the buns as they will shrink during cooking. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Brush patties all over with olive oil and braai until golden brown on both sides.<\/p>\n<p><em>You can also bake them in the oven or cook them on the stovetop. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Allow the patties to rest.<\/p>\n<p>Build sliders with your favourite burger toppings.<\/p>\n<p>Add a generous dollop of homemade tomato sauce to each slider and enjoy!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Image and recipe credit The South African Mushroom Farmers&#8217; Association<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"723\" data-end=\"847\">\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re looking for a crowd-pleasing bite to kick off the weekend, mushrooms are your ultimate secret weapon.
