Whatever the weather throws at us, be it heat, drought, storms or floods,\u00a0 the busy gardener needs plants that will stay the course and not need constant attention.<\/p>\n<p>The gardening industry has stepped up to the challenge, says Kathy Varney, past president of the SA Nursery Association.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it\u2019s the introduction of new or \u2018improved\u2019 tried and trusted varieties, breeding programmes are prioritising plants for better heat, humidity and drought tolerance, wet weather resilience and greater disease resistance. Low maintenance is the watchword.<\/p>\n<p>For busy gardeners wanting the right plants for the right conditions, Kathy offers her top picks for the three categories below, drawing from her experience as marketing manager of BallStraathof.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drought tolerant<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21264\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21264\" style=\"width: 266px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21264 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-2-266x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21264\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Angelonia \u2018Serenita Mix.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Angelonia (aka Summer Snapdragons) can take punishing heat and humidity.\u00a0 Plants are well branched and compact, ideal for filling beds that receive full sun or afternoon sun.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21265\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21265\" style=\"width: 289px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21265\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-3-400x393.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"289\" height=\"284\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21265\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bidens \u2018Bee Meadow\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bidens is irresistible to bees and butterflies and thrives in the heat of summer. It\u2019s a good low growing edging,\u00a0 border or groundcover plant that also grows well in pots.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21266\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21266\" style=\"width: 272px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21266 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-4-scaled-e1768569667366-272x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"272\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21266\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coreopsis Uptick (Gold Bronze).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Coreopsis an easy growing bedding and border perennial that\u2019s sun-loving and drought tolerant. It\u2019s not fussy about soil and has mildew-resistant foliage. Growth is neat, compact and tidy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21278\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21278\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21278\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-5-1-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cuphea \u2019Sweet Talk\u2019 deep pink.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cuphea Sweet Talk grows in full sun or semi shade,\u00a0 and its flowers are a natural sources of nectar for pollinators. The flowers don\u2019t need dead heading, even under hot conditions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21268\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21268\" style=\"width: 301px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21268 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-6-301x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"301\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21268\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Euphorbia \u2018Glitz\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Euphorbia Gramineae<strong> i<\/strong>s heat tolerant across a wide range of conditions, doing best in full sun but able to take some shade. Plants\u00a0 are long-lasting, free flowering plants and fill in fast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wet weather resilient<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21269\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21269\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21269 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-7-300x400.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21269\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canna \u2018Canova\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Canna \u2018Canova\u2019 is fast growing, compact and heat tolerant, but is not invasive. It is a low maintenance plant that does \u00a0best with full sun and moist soil.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21270\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21270\" style=\"width: 331px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21270\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-8-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"248\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21270\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Petchoa BeautiCal \u2018Sunray Pink\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Petchoa BeautiCals are large weather resistant plants that recover from rain much faster than standard petunias. Being a cross between petunias and calibrachoa, they flower profusely like cali\u2019s but with bigger petunia type flowers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21271\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21271\" style=\"width: 371px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21271 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-9-371x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"371\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21271\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Osteospermum \u2018Serenity\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Osteospermum are both heat and wet weather tolerant and hybrids like \u2018Serenity\u2019 are more compact and less likely to fall open. These are no fuss garden plants available in a wide range of colours.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21272\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21272\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21272 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-10-400x302.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"302\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hydrangea \u2018Magical Blue\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hydrangeas like consistently moist soil and fertiliser such as Vigorosa once a month in summer. They thrive in wet weather as long as the soil drains well. Hydrangea \u2018Magical\u2019 is a long flowering variety.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Easy care:<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21273\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21273\" style=\"width: 268px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21273 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-11-268x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21273\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Begonia \u2018Dragon Wing\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Begonias add colour to semi-shady beds and perform well in heat and drought. No deadheading is needed. They range from bedding varieties to shrubby plants, like Dragon Wings for containers. Do not over-water.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21274\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21274\" style=\"width: 331px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21274\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-12-400x369.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"331\" height=\"305\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21274\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Verbena \u2018Firehouse Red.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Verbena \u2018Firehouse\u2019 flowers continuously, as new flowers are opening as the old ones die. The foliage is tough and disease resistant. Place in a position that receives morning sun and afternoon shade.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21275\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21275\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21275 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-13-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21275\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Calibrachoa MiniFamous \u2018Pink Hawaii.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Calibrachoa produce masses of tiny flowers, don\u2019t like to be over watered or fussed over and are vigorous growers that quickly fill the container or hanging basket.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21276\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21276\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21276\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-14-400x267.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Salvia &#8216;Mysty&#8217;.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Perennial salvias have low water needs, grow in ordinary soil that drains well and flower from spring through to autumn. Trimming with hedge clippers improves their flowering and keeps the plant looking neat, but it\u2019s not essential.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21277\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21277\" style=\"width: 307px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21277 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Alice-Coetzee-06-02-2026-gardening-flowers-photo-15-307x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"307\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21277\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dipladenia Diamantina \u2018Jade Pink\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dipladenia \u2018Diamantina \u2018Jade\u2019 or \u2018Opale\u2019 grow 30cm and 45cm high respectively and have colourful trumpet-like blooms.
