comments on how a healthy diet can help maintain the health of your kidneys.\u00a0 Kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located on each side of the spine, just below the rib cage.\u00a0 These organs are very important as they filter blood, removing waste and extra fluid from your body to produce urine.\u00a0 They are also responsible for removing acid that is produced by the cells in your body in order to maintain a healthy balance of salts, water and minerals in your blood.\u00a0 This balance is needed in order for your body\u2019s tissues, nerves and muscles to work properly.\u00a0 Below are some of the other important functions of the kidneys:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Produce red blood cells:\u00a0 <\/strong>The kidneys produce a hormone called erythropoietin which tells the bone marrow to produce red blood cells.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep your bones healthy:<\/strong>\u00a0 The kidneys produce a form of vitamin D which absorbs phosphorus and calcium.\u00a0 Phosphorus and calcium are important minerals that keep your bones strong.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Control blood pressure:<\/strong>\u00a0 In order for the kidneys to work properly, they need pressure.\u00a0 Therefore, kidneys can increase blood pressure if it seems too low or lowers it if it seems too high by controlling fluid levels and making the hormone that tightens the blood vessels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When your kidneys get damaged, waste products and fluid can build up in your body.\u00a0 This can cause weakness, nausea, shortness of breath, shortness in breath as well as swollen ankles.\u00a0 Kidney disease also affects your body\u2019s ability to filter extra fluids out of your blood, clean your blood and control blood pressure which can affect the production of red blood cells.\u00a0 Chronic kidney disease is when your kidneys don\u2019t work well for more than three months.\u00a0 \u2081<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most people don\u2019t have symptoms in the early stages of chronic kidney disease but below are some the symptoms that you might experience:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Urinate more often than usual.<\/li>\n<li>Muscle cramps, especially in the legs.<\/li>\n<li>Weight loss with no obvious reason.<\/li>\n<li>Swollen ankles.<\/li>\n<li>Loss of appetite.<\/li>\n<li>Dry, itchy skin.<\/li>\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Risk factors for kidney disease:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>High blood pressure.<\/li>\n<li>Diabetes.<\/li>\n<li>Obesity.<\/li>\n<li>Family history of kidney disease.<\/li>\n<li>Old age.<\/li>\n<li>Smoking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cEating a balanced diet can keep your kidneys healthy as well as benefit your overall health,\u201d says Coetzee.\u00a0 Below he lists some superfoods for a healthy pair of kidneys.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cauliflower:<\/strong>\u00a0 Cauliflower is great for kidney health as it contains vitamin C and is also a good source of fibre and folate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cranberries:<\/strong>\u00a0 Cranberries are considered good for your urinary system.\u00a0 They can protect against bladder and kidney infections.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fish:<\/strong>\u00a0 Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids as well as anti-inflammatory fats.\u00a0 These healthy fats protect you from kidney-related disease.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blueberries:\u00a0 <\/strong>Blueberries contain many of the properties that you need to maintain healthy kidneys.\u00a0 These include vitamin c, phosphorus and antioxidants which keep the blood clear from toxins.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Red peppers:\u00a0 <\/strong>Red peppers are perfect for kidney health as they are high in vitamins A, B6, C and are low in
