Until, you realise that it\u2019s a \u201cquiet promotion\u201d&#8230; you take on more work and responsibilities without a pay raise or an official position promotion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">High-performing employees being punished for their success by being given more work and responsibilities, instead of being recognised and rewarded for their contributions &#8211; that\u2019s a \u201cquiet promotion\u201d. This troubling trend can lead to burnout, decreased job satisfaction and poor life\/work balance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-1232871\" src=\"https:\/\/caxtondigital.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/2023\/06\/ElanaWagner-21-06-2023-Work-QuietPromotion-2-420x280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"280\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To avoid falling into this trap, we asked <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anjavanbeek.co.za\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Anja van Beek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Agile Talent Strategist, Leadership &amp; HR Expert and Executive Coach, to share some tips on how to go about taking on more work and being rewarded for it accordingly:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Communicate your expectations<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make sure that your manager knows what you expect in terms of recognition and rewards for the additional work you have taken on and your hard work. Be clear about your career goals and what you hope to achieve in your current role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Manage your workload<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep track of your responsibilities and make sure you are not taking on too much work. Be mindful of when you are being asked to take on additional projects and assess whether you have the capacity to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Negotiate for recognition and rewards<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When you are offered additional responsibilities, negotiate for recognition and rewards that are corresponding with the additional work you will be doing. This could include a title change, a raise, or other benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Seek out mentorship and support<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Find a mentor or support network that can help you navigate the complexities of your job and provide advice on how to avoid being quietly promoted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Speak up<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you are being quietly promoted, it is important to speak up and let your manager know your intent and expectations.
