This is where palliative care can make all the difference &#8211; for the patient and the family members around them.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This multidisciplinary, specialised medical care is most commonly called on for life-threatening diseases such as AIDS and cancer. It aims at optimising the patient\u2019s quality of life, as well as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">support their family members, at every stage of the illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Take this quick Q&amp;A to better understand what palliative care is all about:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Who needs palliative care?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Care begins when a life-threatening disease is diagnosed and continues regardless of whether treatment, such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy or any other treatment directed at the disease, is received or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Where is palliative care given?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Palliative care may be provided in healthcare facilities, community centres (such as hospice community centres) or at home. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/hpca.co.za\/palliative-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Association of Palliative Care Centres (APCC)<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0about 100 000 patients and their families receive hospice services every year, mostly in the comfort of their own homes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>How does it help?<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It includes the prevention and management of pain and other symptoms associated with a patient\u2019s illness, as well as supporting a patient\u2019s psychological and spiritual needs. A patient\u2019s family is also supported with advice on how to provide care at home and through counselling, including bereavement support if a patient passes away.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Who can offer palliative care?\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hospice programmes and palliative care teams in certain hospitals offer the needed care.
