Foliage plants\u00a0 are not simply green. They offer a world of colour, pattern and texture to explore. Most thrive with medium to bright indirect light like Begonia Polk Dot that is one of the most photogenic indoor plants.<\/p>\n<p>It can tolerate lower light but not direct sunlight that will scorch its leaves. Place it near a window for filtered light. Keep it compact and bushy by regularly pinching or cutting back. Cut back just above a leaf node when stems are 15 \u2013 16cm high.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21823\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21823\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21823\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Alice-Coetzee-24-04-2026-gardening-indoor-plants-photo-3-300x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Calathea \u2018Princess Jessie.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Calathea Princess Jessie<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s easy to fall in love with Calathea because every single variety is different. They have what\u2019s been described as designer foliage, usually boldly\u00a0 patterned or striped in varying shades of green and white, often with a burgundy under leaf.<\/p>\n<p>Calathea are less fussy about light but they do need a warm, humid room and lightly moist soil (never soggy. Calathea are sensitive to the chemicals in tap water. If the leaf tips or edges\u00a0 go brown, let the tap water stand over night before using it or switch to filter, bottled or rainwater.<\/p>\n<p>Keep the leaves looking bright and glossy by wiping them every now and them with a damp cloth.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21824\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21824\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21824\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Alice-Coetzee-24-04-2026-gardening-indoor-plants-photo-4-361x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"361\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21824\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Peperomia \u2018Watermelon.\u2019<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Peperomia Watermelon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This engaging little plant with leaves that look like miniature watermelons, just needs medium light, ideally an east-facing window that receives soft morning light. While too much light will fade the bright colours in the leaves, too little light may cause the stems to stretch and become leggy.<\/p>\n<p>Keep the soil moist but don\u2019t let it become waterlogged as the plant will immediately wilt and die. It shouldn\u2019t be allowed to dry out completely either.\u00a0 From spring to autumn, feed monthly with a liquid fertiliser to encourage new leaves and repot only when the plant has outgrown its container.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21825\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21825\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Alice-Coetzee-24-04-2026-gardening-indoor-plants-photo-5-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stromanthe \u2018Triostar\u2019.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Stromanthe Triostar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As the light catches the leaves of this variegated plant, the vibrant deep pink of the leaf reverse glows like a stained glass window. It is a thrilling plant to own and is as easy to care for as it is easy on the eye.<\/p>\n<p>Bright indirect light or filtered sunlight brings out is bright and beautiful colours and keeping the leaves free of dust also keeps the colours luminous.<\/p>\n<p>It grows relatively slowly and stays relatively compact making it a good plant for the coffee table, windowsill, home office, or patio. Water when the top 10cm of soil feels dry and mist its leaves to add to the humidity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21826\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21826\" style=\"width: 267px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21826\" src=\"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/Alice-Coetzee-24-04-2026-gardening-indoor-plants-photo-6-267x400.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alocasia Amazonica.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Alocasia Amazonica<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A plant that cries out for a minimalist, contemporary setting is the angular Alocasia Amazonica, that\u2019s also called the African Mask Plant. The elongated dark green leaves are silver etched with dominant silver midrib and veins. It is the star of any show and most certainly Instagram worthy.<\/p>\n<p>It does best in a bright, light, humid environment and needs very little care, just watering when the top of the soil begins to dry.
