I came, I saw, I contoured

A woman applying makeup is sort of like a man preparing for battle. A man just can’t work a skirt, mascara and glossy lips the way a woman can. And most importantly the beautiful and elegant dancer Ginger Rogers did everything that her partner Fred Astaire did, but she did it backwards and in high heels.

In other words ladies, applying makeup is one of the most important tools we have to master, in order to help exude the best possible version of ourselves.

“With makeup you are really just enhancing your natural beauty,” said makeup artist Lisa van Heerden.

Every woman deserves to feel beautiful every day.

Lisa, who is also the co-owner of Turning Heads, believes that beauty starts within.

“Beauty comes in different from, but the one common factor for all women is health. The reason for this is our hair, skin and nails are dependent on healthy, well-functioning internal systems. They reflect the state of our internal health and are often the first warning signs of something not functioning as it should.”

Water is next on the list and Lisa again stresses the importance of drinking at least eight glasses of water a day.

“Water will help rid the body and skin of toxins. Every woman will tell you that by increasing your water intake, your skin has a more radiant glow.”

Lisa is very strict of taking off makeup before your head hits the pillow.

“Your skin needs to be cleaned and prepped before your head hits the pillow. But we forget that when we exercise, we sweat. So it is extremely important to wash your face after an intense workout. Leaving your face all sweaty can potentially cause inflammation, clogged pores, and pimples.”

“Every day, especially in the Highveld with its known dirty air, our skin is exposed to a barrage of free radicals from pollution, toxins and UV rays. Over time, this free radical exposure can cause dullness, discoloration and changes to skin texture. Aging also takes its toll, as declining collagen levels lead to loss of firmness and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. But there is a solution. A diet high in collagen and antioxidants will help to nourish skin from the inside out, reducing free radical damage and preventing the visible signs of aging.”

Lisa gets excited when we start chatting about makeup.

“I am totally addicted to my job and I love making the world a more beautiful place. I am always researching makeup and hairstyling, experimenting and advancing my skills.”

Her advice is that we take a look at our makeup arsenal and think of all the masterpieces we can create with it.

“Quality makeup is non-negotiable. Use the best quality to achieve the best results. With an overwhelming choice of cosmetic products available, most people don’t even know where to start with makeup. Visit a makeup artist for some good solid advice.”

Secondly she says you have to know your brushes.

“Everything depends on the application. Know which brusk to use for what purpose. Yes, with a number of options at your disposal, remembering which brush does what can be daunting. Take time to figure all that out, and till then, remember that fluffy brushes are good for diffusing products like powder or blush, and small brushes are used for products that require precision, like eyeliner and lipstick.”

So ladies, taking Lisa’s advice, let us be beautiful, be colorful and let us contour every flaw into perfection with the right tools.
