Today’s modern women take on so many roles in their lives – caregiver, provider, housekeeper, partner, nurse and psychologist … the list is endless. Putting a 36 hour day in 24 hours is what we are good at. But often we rush around doing everything that we forget about us.

We spend some time with beauty salon owner Caroline Kgotoso to fill up our cups. Because how can we fill up someone else’s cup if our own is empty.

“Ladies, you need to make me-time,” Caroline said in a stern voice.

“Eat well, get enough rest, don’t skip your daily exercise and make sure you take vitamins and drink lots of water.”

Caroline Bellezza’s Salon specialises in customised-made weaves.

“Custom-made weaves have been the hot discussion in the streets. Women can easily and quickly change their look and style by wearing a weave. Weaves are more and more becoming essential products like handbags for women.

Most women now have not only one wig, they have two or even three custom-made wigs that could be worn for nights out in the streets.”

We are taking a closer look into the different weaves.

Brazilian hair is the most popular hair type in South Africa. The hair is typically soft, relatively thick and very durable. For this reason, the hair is suited to any style so it is always a great option whether you prefer a straight, wavy or curly style. Brazilian hair also handles colour extremely well so if you buy Virgin Brazilian hair you can colour the hair to any colour you like. Due to the natural density the hair has, it is also less likely to frizz which is a big plus and you can also use fewer bundles to still maintain a full look.

Peruvian hair has become extremely popular. This hair is extremely durable and versatile and for this reason, allows you to style and curl it repeatedly with great results. This makes Peruvian hair a great multi-purpose hair as you can constantly change your look and style without damaging the hair too much. The hair is extremely soft and slightly silkier than Brazilian hair. As Peruvian hair is still relatively rare, it is also usually relatively more expensive than other hair types.

Malaysian hair has become very popular especially amongst international and South African celebrities. The hair has a very luxurious feel to it and has a great natural shine. The shine is however not excessive and after a few washes looks even more natural. The hair is very strong and for this reason, holds curls extremely well. If you want to experiment with fabulous and regular curling of your hair, then this is a great option. The hair is generally a nice dark brown colour. Like Brazilian hair, it also handles colour well, so if you buy Virgin Malaysian hair, you can colour the hair to any colour or combination of colours you like.

Lastly, we look at Mongolian hair. Mongolian hair is of an Asian origin, thicker hair shaft, not as lightweight as some virgin hair, heavier density and maintains a very soft texture.

Some of you might remember Caroline from Tsogo Sun The Ridge Casino’s marketing team.

“I must say I have learnt a lot while working at The Ridge Casino. My two previous bosses played an important role in this journey. They gave me wings and I flew. Marketing is fun so was gaming promotions and events.

Generally, I value having a sense of control; I kept moving and could not find what I was looking for. So one day I decided to face my fears of failing and I took a bold step, resigned and started my salon. I remember my younger brother asking me, “exactly what kind of money are you looking for?” and my answer was I don’t know, all I knew was – I was looking for that fulfilment……”.

Now that we know more about how she climbed the ladder we asked Caroline what it takes to be a successful business owner.

“Its key to the success of my team and my business, I am focusing on what I have experience in, and my heart is in it. The business is still new. I am hands-on and plan to deliver a sustainable flair, strategies for the future of the business – which includes good quality products, a clean place, strong customer relationships, watching competition closely and growth opportunity; nowadays customer value their health, well-being, and social and environmental stewardship. And then marketing, marketing, marketing and more marketing.”

Caroline took the step out of her comfort zone and chased her dream. Today she has her rightful place amongst some of the best business owners in the city, but she stays humble and focused on making women look beautiful and dazzling.
