Steenberg literally popped the bubbly when the news broke that they triumphed at the 2019 Amorim Cap Classique Challenge as the victorious producer of South Africa’s Best Rosé MCC.
The blushing Steenberg 1682 Pinot Noir MCC, one of 134 Méthode Cap Classique contenders in the competition this year, was awarded Double Gold and the Trophy as the Rosé category winner.
“This is great news for us and even though I am fairly new to Steenberg, everyone knows that Cap Classique is very dear to me. I look forward to continuing this passion and hope to see many more Steenberg awards in future competitions,” says Steenberg Cellar Master Elunda Basson.
This delightful Brut MCC strikes an elegant pose with its pale pink hue and beguiling scents of raspberry jelly, wild strawberry sorbet, red apple skin, and toasted brioche. Its ultra-fine mousse lifts the raspberry-like aromas and the creamy texture, in perfect balance with a bright acidity, lingers long after the last sip.
Crafted in the time-honored French tradition, the Pinot Noir MCC owes its fine effervescence and finesse to secondary bottle fermentation and time spent on the yeast lees. With the hallmark of quality of the iconic Steenberg swan embossed on the bottle, you will want to sip this prized bubbly all summer.
It drinks beautifully now in its youth, but careful cellaring for three to five years will reward with further development leaning towards a more savoury profile.
