When it comes to overall health, nothing is as important as eye care. Something we often tend to overlook… excuse the pun.

And, if you are looking for are looking for the leading experts in eyecare in Pretoria, look no further than Dr. Niemandt.

Dr. Marcel Chris Niemandt is an ophthalmologist situated in the Hazeldean centre in Silver Lakes, Pretoria. He opened his practice back in June of 2013 and has been growing from strength to strength ever since.

Dr. Niemandt’s passion to diagnose and treat various eye conditions started during his medical degree studies at the University of Pretoria when he experienced micro eye surgery with Prof Polla Roux and continued with Dr Linda Visser at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

He successfully completed his eye specialty studies in 2012 and is a member of the College of Medicine of South-Africa (“CMSA”), the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (“OSSA”), the Ophthalmological Management Group (“OMG”) and the South African Society of Oculoplastic Surgery (“SASOPS”).  He is also involved in various social responsibility initiatives such as international eye care awareness week (“ECAW”), where sponsored cataract surgeries are performed for less fortunate patients in the community.

Equipped with the latest in eye care technology, Dr. Niemandt can diagnose and treat eye conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and many more. The practice can offer visual acuity testing and refraction, anterior segment evaluation and photography, tonometry/pachimetry, auto-refraction/keratometry, optical coherence tomography (OCT), fundus fluorescein angiography, fundus auto-fluorescence and fundus photography.

Dr. Niemandt is particularly passionate about refractive eye surgery and the treatment of dry eye syndrome. Some of the options for refractive surgery include the following:

Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (SMILE) surgery:
In the SMILE procedure, Dr Niemandt uses a femtosecond laser to create a small, lens-shaped bit of tissue (lenticule) within the cornea. Then, with the same laser, a small arc-shaped incision is made in the surface of the cornea, and Dr. Niemandt extracts the lenticule through this incision and discards it. With the tiny lenticule removed, the shape of the cornea is altered, correcting nearsightedness. The corneal incision heals within a few days without stitches, and sharper vision occurs very quickly.

LASIK surgery:
During LASIK surgery, a special type of cutting laser is used to precisely change the shape of the dome-shaped clear tissue at the front of your eye (cornea) to improve vision.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK): This is a procedure in which the surface of the cornea is reshaped using an excimer laser. This process removes only 5-10% of the thickness of the cornea for mild to moderate myopia.

These are just some of the options that Dr. Niemandt can offer patients to become spectacle and contact lens independent.

Dr. Niemandt’s practice also offers an exciting treatment for dry eye syndrome: E-Eye. This is an intense regulated pulsed light technology developed by E-Swin’s engineers in France and is a first for dry eye syndrome. Using IRPL technology, this innovative and effective treatment for dry eyes targets the Meibomian glands, treating Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

For the treatment of these and many other eye diseases, do not hesitate to contact Dr. Niemandt’s rooms. Dr. Niemandt and his team are very eager and passionate about eye health and would gladly assist with any ocular emergencies and treatments.
