Taking care of your skin at home does not need to be complicated but it is essential to choose a brand that will look after the health of your skin long term and do nothing harmful for short term gain.

We’re a big fan of Placecol, an award-winning South African brand that uses the power of nature to heal and repair, deeply penetrating due to its advanced scientific delivery system it can change skin on a cellular level.

We asked the skin experts at Placecol for an at-home facial treatment we can try to keep our skin problems at bay… just until we can pop by our favourite salons again. Enjoy!

Step 1: Clean away
Double cleanse your skin making sure it is super clean and ready for a spoil. Placecol Clean Start facial wash contains refreshing menthol to cool and invigorate the skin or you can try the Placecol Clean Start facial milk which contains lactic acid from milk to nourish and feed your skin.

Step 2: Exfoliate, baby!
Utilizing a gentle exfoliator (the experts recommend Placecol Gentle exfoliating refiner) lights exfoliate and buff your skin to get rid of any dead skin cells. You should not be exfoliating more than twice a week.

Step 3: Apply a mask
Select a mask suitable for your skin’s needs (something like the Placecol Hydration mask to deep feed tired devitalized and thirsty skin or the Placecol Clearing Clay mask to freshen and deep clean your skin is advisable).

Step 4: Apply a warm compress over the mask
Wet a face compress or face cloth with quite warm water and hold it over the face. Take a moment to enjoy the sensation of the warmth on your skin. The heat allows deep penetration of active ingredients and is calming and soothing.

Step 5: Take care of your eyes
Create your own eye treatment –  choose between cucumber slices to cool and hydrate the eye area or a beaten egg white mixture to help tighten and firm the eye area. For a more soothing and comforting treatment try applying moistened tea bags to your eye area.

Step 6
After you have removed your mask, apply a toner to balance the PH levels of your skin.

Step 7
Next, select your favorite serum to penetrate deeply into your now beautifully receptive skin.

Step 8
End the treatment off with a comforting and nurturing moisturizer according to your unique skin needs.

“Everyone thinks that the most important products to buy are active serums and it does not matter how you wash or moisturise your skin. The fact is that it all starts with caring for the barrier and health of your skin. Soap bars and poor-quality cleansers strip the skin unnecessarily and damage the barrier, creating gaps in the skin’s defense mechanism, making it vulnerable to pathogens, sensitivity, breakout and pigmentation as well as dehydration, says Lisa Leibov, National Principal for the Imbalie Beauty Training Academy.

The second most important product, according to Lisa is sunblock. “The sun is the single most harmful external factor that damages the integrity of the skin and causes rapid premature aging. Hence the need to protect and defend the skin from the harmful rays of the sun. A few minutes of early morning sun to grasp our Vitamin D fix for the day is sufficient, at all other times an SPF must be worn,” she says.
