Sun City … winter fun city

Sun City is open. Woo hoo! Game drives, quad bikes, segways, helicopter trips and The Maze of the Lost City … see you there.

We never need a reason to book a few days stay at Sun City. But if you need a reason, here are a few of ours. It really is one of our fave places.

Winter is a great time to go animal spotting as magnificent beasts come out to enjoy some sunshine. Perhaps the best way to get an up-close and intimate view of some of South Africa’s wildlife is to take a quad bike through a Sun City nature reserve.  Riding along on a 250cc Suzuki as part of a guided tour, you can get quite close to an assortment of animals, including giraffe, zebra, and even a crocodile. It’s a dusty gritty experience that should definitely be on your to do lost.

If that’s not quite your style, and you’d rather enjoy animal viewing from a different perch, take advantage of a game drive in which you’ll be able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the game viewing on offer.

Sun City is also home to two 18-hole, Gary Player-designed world-class championship golf courses, both 72 par – the Gary Player Golf Course and the Lost City Golf Course, famous for the live Nile crocodiles on its 13th hole. Both courses are magnificent, and even non golfers can experience the natural beauty surrounding the Gary Player Course by taking an hour-long Segway tour, which also gives you magnificent views of the lake that is home to many water sports in summer.

The Segway tour takes an hour and is quite fun with a quick lesson ahead of the ride. If the Lake Glide Tour isn’t for you, then you can glide past the Crocodile Pit and view some of these prehistoric reptiles in their natural habitat. Highly recommended, the Segway tour offers the same experience as walking, but at a quicker speed, allowing you to see more of the landscape. Just wear comfortable shoes because you’ll be on your feet for an hour.

If you’d like a bird’s eye view of Sun City or the Pilanesberg National Park (home to the Big Five), take a flip in a helicopter and cruise over the iconic Palace, the Gary Player Country Club, or go further afield and travel over the majestic Pilansberg National Park. It’s an amazing experience and definitely one for the bucket list.

For those who feel like something a little less exhilarating, but still challenging, the Maze of the Lost City Sun City is great entertainment for adults and children alike, but isn’t child’s play. The largest permanent maze in the Southern Hemisphere, The Maze of the Lost City is constructed from artificial stone and wood, creating the illusion of an ancient archaeological discovery. It covers a half-acre and is accessed via a 100-metre-long suspension bridge from the Entertainment Centre. And you can enjoy a cocktail at the bar when you have made your way through the twists and turns, and watch the sun set.
