{"id":18282,"date":"2023-10-12T16:00:06","date_gmt":"2023-10-12T14:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/pretoria\/?p=18282"},"modified":"2023-10-12T10:41:30","modified_gmt":"2023-10-12T08:41:30","slug":"let-your-kids-fail-now-to-succeed-later-in-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/pretoria\/blog\/2023\/10\/12\/let-your-kids-fail-now-to-succeed-later-in-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Let your kids fail now to succeed later in life"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>As parents, we\u2019re so ready to ease life\u2019s journey for our children, sweeping obstacles out the way, and making sure they know the \u2018right\u2019 way to do things before they set out to do any task so that they don\u2019t fail.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Failing is one of the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baabeetv.com\/blog\/ways-to-teach-kids-failure-is-a-good-thing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">important<\/a> ways that children learn a number of important life skills, including coping with adversity, processing the consequences of their choices and actions, and helping them learn how to reframe, rethink, and adapt to a situation.<\/p>\n<p>While many parents worry about their child making mistakes, they also see how important experimenting and learning from mistakes is to a child\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, according to the 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lego.com\/en-za?age-gate=grown_up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LEGO<\/a> Play Well Study, 97% of respondents said that experimentation builds their child\u2019s confidence with 95% saying that they would rather their child tried something and failed, than that they didn\u2019t try at all. The same number of parents said that experimentation fuels innovation, and 97% proactively encourage their child to get out of their comfort zone.<\/p>\n<p>The children themselves love experimenting \u2013\u00a0 96% like testing new ideas and alternative ways of doing things, although 84% said that they worry about not getting things right the first time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlay is a fun way for children to experiment and make failure \u2018good\u2019,\u201d says Miroslav Riha, country manager for South African and Sub-Saharan Africa for the LEGO Group. \u201cPlay prepares children for the future by helping them develop a wide range of hard and soft skills, including curiosity, creativity, communication, and collaboration\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Children that embrace their mistakes and have the opportunity for a do-over learn that it\u2019s ok to keep on trying, even if they must do so several times over until they get things right. It\u2019s this kind of tenacity that builds resilience and adapt to stress \u2013 important life skills in the playground, classroom, and workplace.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLearning to <a href=\"https:\/\/members.aect.org\/pdf\/Proceedings\/proceedings15\/2015i\/15_07.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">use failure positively<\/a> is a life skill and strategy that everyone puts to good use throughout our lives. When you fail at something, you look at what you did to reach that point, evaluate what could be done differently, and come up with a plan to make your project successful,\u201d Riha says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is true whether you\u2019re building a LEGO set from scratch using the step-by-step manual, designing your own marvellous and imaginative creation using the materials you have to hand, or even in your adult workplace, designing a new product or solution.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re watching your little one\u2019s frustration and eyes brimming with tears because they just can\u2019t get something right, there are some <a href=\"https:\/\/childmind.org\/article\/how-to-help-kids-learn-to-fail\/#:~:text=Failure%20is%20a%20part%20of,meltdowns%20when%20things%20go%20wrong.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">gentle ways<\/a> to help them navigate the journey to seeing the positive parts of failing.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than saying \u2018you\u2019ll do better next time\u2019, acknowledge their disappointment or frustration, along with letting them know that you can see that they want to do better. For example, \u201cI can see that you\u2019re frustrated, and that you really want to solve this problem\u201d is much more constructive than \u201cIt\u2019s ok, you\u2019ll get it right tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Your children look to you as their best example and sharing stories of failures you\u2019ve had will show them how to manage their own disappointment, and how to move on from it too.<\/p>\n<p>You could also suggest that they pause after a difficult moment and take a few minutes to ponder what they\u2019ve learned from the experience \u2013 and what they would do differently next time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese tools obviously vary between different age groups, but the principles are the same,\u201d Riha explains. &#8220;Failure is a gift that teaches life skills, whether children are building a complex construction project, or navigating social issues in the playground.
