{"id":1952,"date":"2019-09-22T09:00:50","date_gmt":"2019-09-22T07:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/pretoria\/?p=1952"},"modified":"2024-05-30T15:42:00","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T13:42:00","slug":"baked-beans-with-a-twist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/getitmagazine.co.za\/pretoria\/blog\/2019\/09\/22\/baked-beans-with-a-twist\/","title":{"rendered":"Baked beans with a twist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a few days Pretorians will gather around the braai for Braai Day, more formally known as Heritage Day, and to help you prepare we&#8217;ve found the most delicious recipe for Maker\u2019s Mark Bourbon Baked Beans, the perfect side dish for the day.<\/p>\n<p>Ingredients<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1kg \u00a0dried pinto or white beans<\/li>\n<li>250g of bacon, cut into medium dice<\/li>\n<li>1 white onion diced<\/li>\n<li>2 cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed<\/li>\n<li>3\/4 cup Homemade Maker&#8217;s Mark\u00ae BBQ sauce<\/li>\n<li>4 shots Makers Mark\u00ae bourbon<\/li>\n<li>1 can of ginger ale<\/li>\n<li>4 cups pork or chicken stock<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Toppings<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 cup panko bread crumbs<\/li>\n<li>3 tbsp. butter<\/li>\n<li>100g \u00a0country ham, chopped<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Method<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Soak dried beans for at least 1 hour or overnight.<\/li>\n<li>While preheating oven to 180 degrees, brown bacon on the stove over medium heat in an oven-safe pot or Dutch oven.<\/li>\n<li>When almost crispy, add onion and garlic and cook for 5 minutes, stirring often.<\/li>\n<li>Drain your beans and add to the bacon mixture.<\/li>\n<li>Add Maker&#8217;s Mark BBQ sauce, Maker&#8217;s Mark Bourbon and ginger ale. Mix well, and then add the pork or chicken stock.<\/li>\n<li>Cover pot, place in oven and bake for 1 hour.<\/li>\n<li>Uncover and bake another 30 minutes or until beans are tender and a crust has begun to form on top of the dish.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the crumb topping<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Melt butter in a saut\u00e9 pan over medium heat and add country ham and panko.<\/li>\n<li>Stir constantly until lightly brown, about 5 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Remove beans from oven and top with the crumble before serving.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a few days Pretorians will gather around the braai for Braai Day, more formally known as Heritage Day, and to help you prepare we&#8217;ve found the most delicious recipe for Maker\u2019s Mark Bourbon Baked Beans, the perfect side dish for the day.
