What started as a friendly catch-up between creative moms over a few cups of coffee has blossomed into one of Pretoria\u2019s most beloved lifestyle markets. Fifteen years later, Tierlantynkies is more than just a market. It\u2019s a celebration of local talent, passion, and a whole lot of heart.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s rewind to 2009. Lorette Kunz and Ronel Coetzer were friends, moms, and budding entrepreneurs with a shared love for all things creative. \u201cAt the time, we were hosting small house markets and getting to know so many other creatives,\u201d recalls Lorette. \u201cWe all had the same struggle \u2013 getting our products out there. Retail wasn\u2019t an option with the markups, and opening a store meant massive overheads.\u201d<\/p>\n

A casual coffee chat soon turned into a shared dream \u2013 to create a platform where passionate makers could connect directly with the public. \u201cWe wanted it to be a win-win,\u201d says Ronel. \u201cMakers could sell at fair prices, and market-goers would discover beautiful, handcrafted goods. And the feedback you get from talking to people face to face? Invaluable!\u201d<\/p>\n

As moms, they were also looking for something that offered a bit more balance. \u201cWe dreamed of a beautiful, big market that felt like a family day out \u2013 with food, music, and space for the kids,\u201d Lorette adds.<\/p>\n

The first Tierlantynkies came together quickly. \u201cWithin two days, we had a venue, a name, and a few excited exhibitors,\u201d says Ronel. That first event \u2013 with just 30 exhibitors \u2013 was held at The Collection on Garsfontein Road. \u201cIt took some convincing to get people on board,\u201d she laughs. \u201cBut we were so passionate. We did everything ourselves \u2013 even the cleaning!\u201d<\/p>\n

That passion paid off. \u201cI still remember how thrilled we were when 400 people came through the gates,\u201d says Lorette. \u201cWe sat up half the night calculating handwritten invoices and dreaming about the next one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fifteen years later, Tierlantynkies has grown into one of Pretoria\u2019s biggest lifestyle events, now hosted at Moreleta Church with thousands of visitors and up to 130 handpicked exhibitors. Held twice a year, it\u2019s become a must-visit festival filled with inspiration, music, great food, and small-batch shopping at its best.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are so many success stories, but one that immediately comes to mind is Fat Plant,\u201d says Lorette. \u201cJohn started by decorating someone else\u2019s stand with a few plants. Today, he\u2019s one of our top sellers. He owns a booming business that has grown tenfold over the past few years. He started off with two employees and now employs 25 people. Then there\u2019s Pure Primal, a proudly local skincare brand. \u201cSylvie started her range after surviving cancer,\u201d Ronel shares. \u201cHer passion is incredible. She quickly became one of our top vendors, and the revenue she earned here helped her expand and grow exponentially.\u201d<\/p>\n

And then, of course, there\u2019s the name \u2013 as fun to say as the market is to visit. \u201cWe loved the nostalgic Afrikaans word Tierlantynkies,\u201d explains Lorette. \u201cIt means a collection of overly decorative elements or embellishments \u2013 which felt perfect for what we were building.\u201d Later, they added a clever twist, introducing KIES to play on the idea of \u201cchoosing\u201d what you love. \u201cIt worked well for signage and logos,\u201d says Ronel, \u201cbut the full name stuck. It\u2019s part of who we are.\u201d<\/p>\n
