Protect, nurture, and understand the skin you\u2019re in.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When Dr Nivana Ramlachan talks about dermatology, her whole face lights up. South Africa\u2019s first female dermatologist to practise Mohs micrographic surgery and winner of Best Dermatologist in the 2025 Best of Pretoria Rekord Readers\u2019 Choice Awards, she\u2019s a woman driven by purpose. \u201cIf you love what you do, you\u2019ll never work a day in your life,\u201d she says with a warm smile. \u201cThat\u2019s truly how I feel. I love my work, my patients, and being able to make a difference every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>A life of purpose and precision<\/strong><br \/>\nWith more than two decades in practice, Dr Nivana has built an international reputation for excellence \u2013 from performing advanced Mohs surgery to mentoring doctors abroad. She\u2019s trained extensively overseas, travelled widely, and treated patients from every continent, all while maintaining a loyal patient base in Pretoria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always believed that learning never stops. Every time I travel, I gain a new perspective \u2013 whether it\u2019s in medicine, culture, or life. But no matter where I go, my heart is always with my patients here at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What sets her apart isn\u2019t just her skill but also her sincerity. \u201cWhen a patient sits across from me, I want them to feel heard and understood. It\u2019s not about talking over their heads \u2013 it\u2019s about walking with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>The power of Mohs surgery<\/strong><br \/>\nDr Nivana\u2019s special interest, Mohs micrographic surgery, is regarded as the most effective technique for treating skin cancer. \u201cIt offers the highest possible cure rate \u2013 up to 100 per cent margin clearance \u2013 while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible,\u201d she explains. \u201cIt\u2019s meticulous work that demands precision, patience, and compassion. Every case is deeply personal to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Having performed countless procedures, she has earned her place as one of South Africa\u2019s most respected and leading dermatologists. \u201cTo see patients recover and thrive \u2013 that\u2019s the greatest reward of all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Know your skin, protect your skin<\/strong><br \/>\nSkin cancer remains the most common cancer among humans, yet awareness is still limited. \u201cPeople often don\u2019t realise how prevalent it is. Regular skin checks should be as routine as dental or breast exams. Early detection saves lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She emphasises that the skin isn\u2019t just what we see. \u201cIt\u2019s our largest organ \u2013 constantly working to protect, regulate and communicate with the body,\u201d she explains. \u201cSo, it deserves care and attention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Understanding your skin type and sun-exposure risks is key. \u201cLighter skin types are at higher risk, but darker skin can develop aggressive cancers too. Everyone needs to know what\u2019s normal for their skin and see a dermatologist for regular screenings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her golden rule? Responsible sun behaviour. \u201cEnjoy the sunshine, but do it safely \u2013 use a broad-spectrum SPF 50, reapply often, wear a hat, and protect exposed areas. The sun gives us joy and vitamin D, but too much of it can cause both premature ageing and cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The holiday season, she admits, is the time we all let go a little \u2013 late nights, indulgence, extra sun. \u201cIt\u2019s wonderful,\u201d she laughs, \u201cbut your skin doesn\u2019t forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For those wanting to feel their best before the holidays, she recommends low-downtime aesthetic treatments. \u201cBotulinum toxin, skin boosters and Exosomes therapy are safe and predictable, perfect for a natural glow.
