How do you design a bedroom that delights a tween, impresses a teen, and still makes the parents happy? You call Marilize Jacobs. The interior designer who thinks wildly outside the box and brings a dash of quirky fun to every space she touches.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Marilize Jacobs from Pigs Can Fly Interiors received the brief for this project, she laughed and said, \u201cThis is the kind of job that\u2019s equal parts dream \u2026 and challenge.\u201d
\nA Woodhill Estate family reached out with a request that most parents of Gen Alpha daughters will understand all too well. \u201cWe have two girls, Katryn and Nina, sharing a room,\u201d the mom told her. \u201cAnd they\u2019re definitely not ready for a boring adult space.\u201d
\nWhat they wanted instead was something vibrant, personal and Marilize\u2019s favourite word, intelligent. A room with staying power. A room that could take them from their tweens into their teenage years without needing a full redesign every time their taste changed \u2026 as it so often does.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Where it all began \u2026<\/strong>
\n\u201cWhen I walked into that first consultation, it felt like stepping into a fizzy, creative tornado.\u201d Between colour combos, concept boards, (Marilize prefers that term to mood board), and two girls bubbling with completely different tastes, it was clear this was going to be fun.<\/p>\n

Katryn, the eldest, loves her greens. Nina, her younger sister, lives solidly in the land of pink. Their parents, however, had one non-negotiable. The new space needed to fit in with the home\u2019s elegant French-inspired interior and it had to last.<\/p>\n

\u201cFuture-proofing the room was key,\u201d Marilize explains. \u201cI needed to design a space that feels magical right now, but that will also still feel right five years from now.\u201d<\/p>\n

A colour story with personality<\/strong>
\nInstead of choosing one daughter\u2019s favourite colour over the other\u2019s, Marilize leaned right into the contrast. \u201cPink and green actually love each other,\u201d she laughs. \u201cAs long as their intensity matches.\u201d<\/p>\n

To keep things timeless, the walls were kept neutral and warm. \u201cWall colour is the easiest and most disruptive thing to change. So your base? That needs to be calm and classic. Everything fun can happen on top of that.\u201d And fun \u2026 did happen.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Custom pieces with heart (and a touch of mischief)<\/strong>
\n\u201cMass produced?\u201d Marilize says, shaking her head. \u201cNot for a space like this.\u201d
\nEvery key piece in Katryn and Nina\u2019s room was either custom-made or sourced from local artisans. But the stars of the show? A pair of occasional chairs upholstered in fabric hand-painted with the quirkiest, most charming little beetles.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re elegant, but a little mischievous. Perfect for girls who love personality.\u201d
\nSpeaking of mischievous \u2026 one accessory always gets a reaction. A little pup caught mid-sprinkle. \u201cThe girls burst out laughing when they saw it. That\u2019s the point. A kids\u2019 room should make you smile. It should feel lived-in, loved-in \u2026 and a little cheeky.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The big reveal<\/strong>
\nThere\u2019s a special moment in every design project. The first time the client sees their new space. When Katryn and Nina walked into their room, the reactions were priceless.
\n\u201cTheir eyes got huge. They flopped onto their beds. They pointed at everything. It was magic,\u201d Marilize recalls with a smile.<\/p>\n

But it was Nina who delivered the moment Marilize will never forget. She looked around, beaming, and said, \u201cWow, aunty Marilize, thank you so much.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is the highest praise. That\u2019s when you know you got it right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The lesson for parents designing a kids\u2019 room<\/strong>
\nAccording to Marilize, designing for children requires \u201ca bit of vision in both directions.\u201d
\n\u201cYou have to honour who they are right now, but also create a solid design foundation for who they\u2019re becoming.\u201d
\nHer advice?
\n\u2022 Invest in custom, quality pieces that don\u2019t date.
\n\u2022 Keep the walls neutral and the base classic.
\n\u2022 Add personality through colour, texture and unique accents.
\n\u2022 And don\u2019t be afraid of maximalism. When it\u2019s curated, it\u2019s magical.
\nBecause, as this project shows, kids\u2019 rooms don\u2019t have to be babyish or adult. With thoughtful design, they can be beautiful, joyful and timeless all at once.<\/p>\n
