The rugby fans\u2019 guide to English"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a scrum of rugby fans around the world congregating in stadia, pubs and around any available TV, there\u2019s a chance you could miss out if you don\u2019t know your braai from your barbie or a bevvie from a brewski.<\/p>\n<p>To help bewildered fans navigate this Babel, <strong>British Airways\u2019<\/strong> cabin crew, who between them speak 45 different languages, from Arabic to Zulu, have put together a glossary of words and phrases which may be heard more often between now and November 2 as fans swap stories and favourite moments in the air and on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>All could be used by fans who think they\u2019re speaking dinkum English and may be puzzled why other fans don\u2019t understand them.<\/p>\n<p>Here they are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arvo:<\/strong> Australian for afternoon. \u201cThe Wallabies are playing this arvo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Braai:<\/strong> South African term for a barbeque. \u201cAs soon as I get home we\u2019re going to have a braai to celebrate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Craic:<\/strong> Irish term for fun or gossip. \u201cGreat craic watching the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dwtty:<\/strong> Welsh for someone who is little. \u201cThat scrumhalf is dwtty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fairy-dust:<\/strong> An American expression meaning something is too technical or obscure to understand. \u201cThe refereeing of the ruck is fairy-dust to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gutted:<\/strong> English slang for bitter disappointment. \u201cI was absolutely gutted we lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hayibo!<\/strong> Derived from the Zulu meaning \u2018definitely not\u2019, this expression is used by all South Africans when something seems unbelievable. \u201cHayibo! There\u2019s no way that was a try.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Isnae: <\/strong>Scottish for \u2018is not\u2019. \u201cThat yellow card isnae fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jandals:<\/strong> What New Zealanders call flip flops. \u201cIt\u2019s going to be hot so I\u2019m wearing my jandals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kerfuffle:<\/strong> Canadian term for an awkward or stressful situation or commotion. \u201cthat was a bit of a kerfuffle on the tryline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lekker:<\/strong> A word used in Namibia and South Africa to describe something that is good, great, cool or tasty. \u201cThe T5 lounge is a really lekker place to watch the match.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Naff:<\/strong> English word for something that\u2019s uncool. \u201cYou look really naff in that anorak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Owt:<\/strong> Yorkshire term for anything. \u201cYou get owt for nowt.\u201d You don\u2019t get anything for nothing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quid:<\/strong> What the Brits call a pound. \u201cI bet you ten quid we\u2019ll beat you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rark up:<\/strong> Kiwi expression for giving someone a good telling off. \u201cThe ref gave him a good rark up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scrag:<\/strong> Australian term for holding someone by the neck or garment. \u201cHe got scragged just before the line.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/echoglobal.tech\">EchoGlobal<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Toque:<\/strong> Canadian word for a woollen hat or beanie.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Uggs:<\/strong> Warm Australian sheepskin boots. \u201cIt\u2019s freezing, best wear your beanie and uggs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vuvuzela:<\/strong> A long, colourful plastic trumpet some South African fans use to make a loud braying sound. Apparently the is derived from the Zulu for making a noise.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whinge:<\/strong> Originally an English world for whining, sometimes used by Australians to describe the English. \u201cStop whinging and accept the better team won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>XXXX:<\/strong> Pronounced \u2018four x\u2019 it is a brand of beer made in Queensland, Australia, and is also referred to as \u201cBarbed wire.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yabber:<\/strong> An Australian expression for talking a lot. \u201cI wish the ref would stop yabbering and get on with the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Zonked:<\/strong> English expression for totally exhausted. \u201cThe team must be totally zonked after that defensive effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Flying to almost 300 destinations, more than 2\u00a0000 cabin crew speak at least one other language. Hundreds of crew and ground staff can fluently speak French, Spanish, German and Italian.
