COASTAL RETREAT

Modern design, Bali-inspired décor and chic details come together in this cosy seaside apartment.

Twin sisters Che Peinke and Stacy Cheves are the owners of Bali’to Bungalow, a beautiful three-bedroom apartment in Ballito that they renovated together and rent out as a holiday home. With a muted palette and natural elements, the space is the perfect blend of tranquillity and style. We chatted to them about their design choices and how they achieved an aesthetic that’s both elegant and comfortable.

THE INSPIRATION
The sisters shared a vision of creating a unique, welcoming space that offers travellers a home away from home. “Both of us are avid travellers, so we know the importance of finding comfortable, affordable, and unique places to stay,” says Che. “We wanted to create a space that is not only functional and stylish but also filled with the warmth and personal touch often missing from traditional hotels and B&Bs.”

A CALM PALETTE
Che and Stacy chose a soothing colour palette – muted neutrals dominate the space, from soft taupe and warm beiges to cool greys and crisp whites. They wanted to create a calm environment that would make it easy for their guests to relax. “The use of neutrals also enhances light and space,” explains Che.

A BLEND OF COMFORT AND STYLE
The open-plan living area is a masterclass in minimalist design. A large couch in a soft beige fabric anchors the room, providing ample seating for family and friends. Accented with throw pillows in various shades of cream and beige, it invites relaxation. The coffee table, a sleek mid-century piece, adds to the simple elegance of the apartment. Large windows flood the space with natural light, making the apartment feel airy and expansive.

SLEEK AND FUNCTIONAL
The kitchen, seamlessly integrated into the living space, boasts a clean and uncluttered design. A dining table with a wood base sits adjacent to the kitchen. Paired with modern, woven chairs, it creates a cosy nook for meals with a gorgeous sea view. An enclosed balcony houses a bar area, which is accessible from the living area.

DESIGNED WITH BUDGET IN MIND
When it comes to renovating, Stacy and Che recommend setting a realistic budget right from the start. “Determine how much you can afford and stick to it,” advises Che. “Effective planning, careful selection of materials and professionals, and clear communication are essential for a successful property.” They also suggest allocating funds to the most important items first; and to DIY wherever possible. “Do it yourself projects can save money and add a personal touch to your space,” she says.
