TROPICAL TONES

Earthy colours, natural textures and tropical scenes…
Linka Rasmussen’s art is a reflection of her love for North Coast living.

‘I’ve always been an artist. I’ve worked with my hands and painted and created for as long as I can remember,” says Linka. Although she has a background in architecture, she has been painting professionally for the last seven years and wouldn’t have it any other way. Originally from Cape Town, she’s an avid surfer and was drawn to the warm Indian Ocean almost a decade ago. Now, the North Coast is her home and she’s constantly inspired by its wild beauty.

THE WORK
Linka works with oil on canvas and describes her style as ever-evolving. She takes some inspiration from post-impressionist work, but has recently found herself using looser brush strokes and creating more vibrant and emotive work than before. “When I’m having fun, I find my work is better,” she admits. “I’ve learnt over time to loosen up. I allow the piece to take me on a journey instead of restricting myself, so I’m enjoying my work now more than ever. That feels like growth!”

THE INSPIRATION
“I can’t get away from being inspired by the North Coast environment!” says Linka. “I love the ocean, but I’m drawn to earthy colours so I enjoy painting landscapes and still life.” In much of her current work, she plays with the contrast between light and dark and the pieces hold a dreamlike quality.

THE PROCESS
Linka balances life as a mom to three young children – “the most important job there is!’ – with her career as a full-time artist, and says that she’s never short of ideas. She exhibits at galleries, as well as social spaces and sells her work both locally and abroad. “Galleries, cafés, shops and pop-ups all keep the love alive and help to reach a broader audience, making art accessible to all,” she says.
